Canyon [NGUAC 2021]

This is my submission for the NGUAC's tryout phase.

This composition was originally composed in January 2012. I've re-arranged, mixed and mastered it for this year's NGUAC specifically.

I chose it because I felt like it was able to showcase broadly what I can do musically and compositionally in a short amount of time. Convenient for the tryout phase, I thought!

Canyon is the second part of a 2-part musical composition. The first part is called Yerchin and concludes on an intense build-up which acts as a transition for the intro of this one (hence its sudden and straight-forward nature).

Although the mix is far from perfect (I'm only using headphones!), I hope this piece can still manage to provide you guys with an enjoyable listening experience!

Good luck to everyone else participating in the NGUAC! :D

New track when

when did ennio morricone join dream theater? jokes aside, this is tight and i really like that spaghetti western whistly sound a lot! the mix isn't perfect but it's pretty good. the piano is too focused on the position it's panned too and could use a little more width, and the heavy rhythm guitars feel a bit too front and center. the brass is a bit on the loud side when it comes in too and i think you can ease off on the choir just a little too while still maintaining that epic feeling you get once you mash it all under the master limiter. wish we got the first part as well, because it does feel like it's missing a lot of it's musical world with that intro. but really great composition regardless, very well thought out and detailed.

important notes on my NGUAC review process: https://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/1476427/18#bbspost26965604_post_text

I love the energy and sound design right off the bat, especially that airy synth at :08 and the frantic percussion. The meter change at :41 was a pleasant surprise, and once the orchestral pads come back in at around 1:15 I get a good sense of just how well the mix holds up. The vocal samples later on aren't necessarily my favorite, nor is the pseudo-fadeout ending. That said, the evocative string solos at 1:20 and the fun synth at :16 that sounds like whistling are some stellar sound design choices, and as usual with you the overall composition is great. Keep at it, Scott! ^^
