Left Out (Jazza's Isolation Competition)

Digital (Photoshop - Digital)

About me:

As a kid, I really enjoyed drawing. I wasn't bad, but not "good" either. Feeling I need to get better in middle school, I decided to get better at a single thing first: dogs. I don't really know why, but I enjoyed looking at drawings of animals than humans. So, for 1 1/2 years or so, I practiced as much as possible. During that, I was able to get my hands on Copic markers (btw, it's cheaper in Japan than the US), and recently Photoshop and an Intuos. And, with this competition, I wanted to make something more grand than usual.

About the piece:

Isolation. There are 2 main types of it. First is physical isolation. The dog is left outside. Separated by a wall, cold and lonely. This piece does represent that, but I also wanted to represent the second type. And I think it represents it more: social isolation. The light shows it. The presence of light shows how there is the owner indoor. Possibly having a dinner with their family. Someone is close by, and the dog knows that. But, can't go in. And that's my life. I have classmates, but nobody I can talk to everyday in my class. I have people around me, but still lonely.

I wanted to try a new art style, specifically in digital art. So I made this, and it went way better than I expected. I wanted the "soft feeling", especially for the dog, something that doesn't look plastic/fake and looks like a picture from a children's book, whatever that means. I hope you can see it. I also wanted to experiment with light and shadows. Learning that just black shadow looks boring, I went with dark blue. I think it goes great with the theme. To counter the shadows, I picked yellow as the light. It's warm, the opposite of the cold blue (yes, I know that orange is the opposite of blue), and it shows a warm group inside, something the dog is left out.

Finally, I wanted the light to mean something, a part of the piece and the theme. I didn't want light to be just a thing to show the main character, like a spotlight. I didn't want it to be just a way to show the main character is lonely in a dark room. So, I made the light mean family/group, warmth. And like I said, that is the thing that is the dog is left out of. Isolated.

I hope you enjoy my art!

Edit: So, I switched to the open category. It wasn't because I felt attacked/forced, but after reading the comments, I decided to change it.

I do think you deserve to be in this part of the competition, I'm doing digital art for around the same time as you are: I started mid-september 2017 when I first drew digitally. A year actually does a lot, I like the idea you've put into this. and the softness in your colours. Don't worry about this part of the competition, it's more then just quality it's also the story it tells if it will reach Jazza etc. I think it certainly has a chance of doing so. As a fellow competitor, I wish you the best of luck.

Bro, you should change the tag to the open category. First of all, if you're 14, it's for people up to 12, and you've been practicing a lot for 1 1/2 years, so you're not new to art. Finally, that doesn't give other people like me that're 12 and under a chance. And I highly think you could win the open category too!

Thanks for changing it! I really hope you win! If you don't I'm going to feel so guilty and it's probably the best art I've seen so far.

TheRightTree responds:

I changed it. I got more worried as the deadline came closer. Thanks for the comment!

EDIT: The following wall text I left, it's not a personal attack of any kind.

I highly encourage to change the tag to the open category one. I know that you left your reasons, but still... It's clear that you're not "new to art".

I don't really know if the "taking this as my first and last entry as a "beginner" " statement could justify your entry. In the official announcement post in Jazza's website (which, BTW, I'll link it at the end) you can find this paragraph:

"TO ENTER THE BEGINNER CATEGORY: TAG your artwork with the word ‘B-IsolationComp’
(Please remember the beginner category is for people you are very young, around 12/yo or younger, and for people who are extremely new to art)"

I don't really now which are your "exact" reasons on your decision, but i'll still say this:
If you think that you will be "destroyed" in the open category... Remember, an artwork with a good story/meaning is more impactful than one with a good technique. Yours has a great story behind (Even though if it's not explicitly told in the artwork), and I can tell with confidence that is far better than most of the entries in the open category.

If you still decide to keep your entry in the begginer category, that's fine. Just don't be angry or something like that if you get disqualified.

EDIT: I read further into the comments, and I want to make a response on this quote of yours: "[...] If the host, Jazza, thinks this art is the best, I should deserve the prize for the improvement I was able to achieve [...]"

Art competitions, and probably competitions in general, doesn't rate the ammount of effort you put into a thing, they rate the final result. It really doesn't matter if you achieved to make the artwork in 12 minutes, for example. If it emits more emotion or skill (depends on the theme of the competition) than the rest... That artwork must win.
It's like saying that I deserve the open category prize just because the amount of improvement I had in the past 6 months (which is true, I improved a lot) as a main reason for me to win, and as a seccondary the quality and emotion of my artwork.

I hope that I wasn't rude with my words; and if I was, I'm sorry, that wasn't my intentions. Hope you understand.

TheRightTree responds:

Thanks for the comment. So, I changed it. As the deadline came closer, I became more and more worried. I totally understand that it wasn't a personal attack, and I appreciate it.

Also, it may be my wording being weird, but what I meant by "If the host, Jazza, thinks this art is the best, I should deserve the prize for the improvement I was able to achieve" is that the category that art should enter (in this competition), shouldn't be defined by the art quality itself, but the artist themselves (aka beginner or experienced). I understood that the time spent means nothing if the final product is bad.

Hi! Just wanted to say this art is very beautiful. There’s so much contrast and detail. Could u list some of the supplies u used? I love to draw as well. It relieves so much stress for me (especially the stress and awkwardness of middle school). It helps me deal with anxiety and pain. Anyways, I just wanted to inform u that I love this drawing. U have power within the pencil ✏️ my friend 🙂😊💕

Edit: ok thx this is amazing 😊

TheRightTree responds:

I used a Wacom Intuos M and Adobe Photoshop CC.

Good job, i love the textures. but............ are you not a kid/beginner?

Im not trying to be mean, but you are only supposed to enter if you are twelve and under.

I believe that you did the right thing, and i love the artwork, keep on pursuing your craft and have a great day.

TheRightTree responds:

Sorry for the late response - was getting more worried about the category. And I changed it.
