AXM477

In the interest of having some finished art on here, here's an oldie, one I might come back to, but one I'm proud of.

These missiles are of a class meant to be carried by fighters in large numbers, capable of locking onto air and surface targets with a combined effect warhead at the expense of range. The Collective's take on this idea, the AXM477, is launched from a tube filled with a fuel-air mixture for additional velocity and some protection of its delicate hull. Once released, the missile's primary advantage over its contemporaries is sheer speed- using a substantial hybrid-fuel aerospike engine, the missile accelerates rapidly to a very high speed. This is leveraged by using a kinetic warhead, a high-density long-rod penetrator- the weak hull collapses easily to allow it to perforate deep into armor on hit.

For control, it relies purely on thrust vectoring. This foregoes electrical actuators in favor of a gas pressure system, utilizing the pressure of the main motor to move the vectoring paddles. Of course, this means it has no control once the motor burns out- this results in actually somewhat limited range, except against stationary targets, even considering how much fuel it has and how much distance it can cover in its burn time. While its engine is burning, missile is capable of extremely tight turns and utilizes advanced seekers to aim high off-boresight- the Collective specializes in procuring such technology very affordably, which allows the AXM477 to have comparatively complex avionics and sensors for such a disposable package- these are also crucial to allowing the sensors and controls to compensate for any rolling motion the missile may undergo, as it has no ways to actively counteract a roll. Of course, given how its maneuverability is limited by its energy and how much energy it bleeds in such a turn, over-the-shoulder shots tend to be reserved for biting at unmaneuverable targets like transports and bombers- to get a long-range hit on a fighter with such an angle would require the victim to be very unaware (which, given the Collective's focus on VLO aircraft, does happen).

The missile's fins fold down into a relatively small package (considering the type of motion this requires, that joint should be a ballsocket, but I drew it as a hinge oops).
