Transformers Tuesday: Stunticon Wildrider

Share

@EarthRabbitDraws was a big fan of my redesign of Dead End, and asked if I would ever redesign the other Stunticons. Honestly, I really only intended to redesign one other: the team's resident lunatic, Wildrider.

Design-wise, this version is based on Wildrider's appearance in the Transformers: Animated toyline and comic. That incarnation shares a majority of his design DNA with Animated Lockdown. The only major difference is his head, replacing Lockdown's skull-like visage with a saw-toothed, crazed-looking Frankenstein's monster with a passing resemblance to the Masters of the Universe character Trapjaw. He's got his iconic carbon fiber patterned hood, which, like I did with Dead End, I moved to his chest since the Stunticon's M.O. of wearing their car modes like backpacks didn't appeal to me. The spikes on his neck, a carryover from Lockdown, actually help further the homage. Though missing on the G1 toy, the character model for the original Wildrider had two spiked protrusions on the sides of his head.

G1 Wildrider is one of the many examples of character models heavily deviating from the toys they're based on. Aside from the missing spikes, Wildrider's toy doesn't actually have a face. Instead, he has an ill-defined corrugated faceplate of some sort.

Even his boxart ignored his toy's actual features, choosing instead to give him a nose, mouth, and angry eyebrows.

Animated Wildrider is the crazier looking of the two, but in terms of characterization, the G1 version is actually crazier. Animated Wildrider looks like a crazed serial killer, but is actually the team's talented and fiercely intelligent pyrotechnics director. On the other hand, for the G1 version, "those who know him better realize it's not an act - he really is that nuts!"

I liked making Wildrider far lankier and crazier-looking than his original incarnation, and having a heavier inclusion of spikes. I like picturing him towering over the others, with them unable to get a read on him.

I had fun designing him, and I hope that you like him!

Nice! You were a lot creative with this one too. Great job! :D

Thank you so much!

Yep, you totally got the "wild and crazy" feeling with this! Nice work with his face!

HeartisttheArtist responds:

I'm glad that I was able to capture that! I was worried about it being too excessive. The face really does add a lot, doesn't it?
