I created this painting to express and reflect upon a multitude of mental health difficulties that tend to drastically increase during the summer months. (I don’t hate summer, but I much prefer the autumn and winter.) I actually started this painting a few months back, but I wasn’t quite sure what to do with it or whether or not I’d end up publishing it anyway. I decided to keep the background empty, symbolizing my idea of an abyss as a blinding, infinite whiteness, with the canvas texture left behind as static. This painting was also heavily inspired by the music and art of Chelsea Wolfe’s album, Hiss Spun, and this painting (basically) shares a title with a track off of that album. I’ve also watched pretty much every film adaptation of Dracula within the past month or so, and was inspired by Gary Oldman’s ugly-crying in the 1992 adaptation.
