Heartist Doodle Dump: September 2023

What's shakin', eggs and bacon?

School's been keeping me busier than ever, but I feel like I have a pretty good handle on things as of right now. These are some drawings I've made in my downtime this month. They're not full pieces, but I'm pretty happy with them all the same!

The first is Sam Alexander, the second Nova, and a personal favorite legacy character of mine. His look here is based on one that hasn't gotten much of a spotlight even in the comics; a potential future version of himself seen in a magical space mirror called the Black Vortex. I always dug this look, and the fact that it appears so little only made it cooler to me. The gold piping all over his costume ended up making him look a bit like something Jack Kirby might've cooked up, in my opinion.

The second is Venom, specifically Dylan Brock—son of Eddie Brock. Since I'm not crazy about the 'dragon' symbol that replaced the spider when Dylan inherited the role, I swapped it back, which ended up making it pretty hard to tell him apart from how I draw his dad. The most noticeable differences are the chains around his wrists, but I also did my best to draw the eyes and teeth just differently enough.

The third is the least refined, and was more of an experiment than anything else. I wanted to see if I could blend Captain America's most old-school designs with his modern ones, especially the ones from the movies. I cut down massively on panel lining and greebles, and have more solid, separated blocks of color. I also tried to marry the two different vibes by meeting them halfway, like giving him the clasic "scale mail" in the form of plates on his chest and shoulders, and making his cowl emulate modern soldier helmets that has little eagle wings sticking off of it(as opposed to just being decals).

The fourth and final drawing is based on an animated trailer made for some mobile game(which you can see I'm emulating directly). Squirrel Girl, to me, is a joke character who's never quite landed—I think she hasn't found her footing yet. But I can't deny that giving her a Sailor Moon transformation made her downright adorable. I wound up enjoying how she looks so much that I want to draw her more!

What do you think of these, do you have a favorite? Would you like to see more of any of them? Be sure to let me know, and be sure to be kind to yourself!

Good attention to detail.

Thank you!

I WANT SQUIRREL GIRL TO SIT ON MY NUTS!!!!!!

HeartisttheArtist responds:

I don’t think that’s how it should work…

Oh, that is Dylan! I am so far behind on current Venom comics that I forgot his Venom had those wrist chains. From a distance I thought they were REALLY veiny arms like how Mark Bagley often drew them, but those are very visibly chains now that I got a closer look at them.

While it might be a bit unrefined, I still really like that Cap redesign. You've always had a good eye for making redesigns feel modern while keeping that classic appeal. It's a hard balance to nail, but you got it.

While schooling might be eating up a lot of your free time, you still managed to make some pretty terrific stuff here despite that. By the way, glad to hear that's going well for you so far and that you've got a good handle on it. Best of luck in the future!

HeartisttheArtist responds:

Yeah, without his ‘dragon’ symbol, Dylan looks almost indistinguishable from Eddie’s Venom.

I’m glad you like the Cap design! Good to know I found the balance between modern and classic, it’s something I always work to maintain.

Big thanks, my dude! It’s your support that helps me keep a handle on things—I really appreciate it!

Squirrel Girl is the most huggable character ever made by Marvel! :3
That version of Nova is really badass, looks more of a villain than a hero but still awesome! Nice job with Dylan chains, they're really noticeable besides them being the same color of the symbiote.

HeartisttheArtist responds:

Huggable is right, that was the kind of build I tried to give her when drawing her!
I wonder if it’s the closed helmet that makes him seem more evil? Could be the red fins, too.
They’re a small detail, but they really help Dylan stand out and give him his own vibe!

Nice work on this, the Venom and Nova are especially badass!

HeartisttheArtist responds:

I think so too—thank you for the kind feedback!
