Crossbones Locked n' Loaded

Share

A drawing of Crossbones, the Marvel mercenary and foe of Captain America! Those of you looking closely(or those who read the blog post about it) will have noticed that he made a background cameo in my previous piece. Those of you that know Crossbones might not have recognized him because he's wearing sleeves.

I focused on texture rather than color here. I tried to use as few colors as possible, in fact. His outfit is entirely shades of black, blue-grey, or extremely dark blue. Other than his skin and mask, I wanted to keep the highlights on his clothes pretty minimal.

Do you think I accomplished that goal? What do you think of Crossbones? Why are most of the descriptions of my work weirdly overblown, long-winded rants that occasionally become uncomfortably personal?

Be sure to let me know what you think! I always love hearing feedback from you all.

like the style it kinda reminds me of some shadbase type shit

HeartisttheArtist responds:

Not sure how I feel about that compliment, tbh. I’m glad you like it, at least?

Very nice dude! I'll admit I have absolutely no idea about who crossbones is, but I think you did a really good job with the design! The minimal use of color really draws the eyes to where there is contrast in the piece, like Crossbone's mask, and I'm honestly amazed at how detailed you got with just shading.

HeartisttheArtist responds:

That’s totally understandable, Crossbones is one of those many characters in comics that is recognizable, but never really given much in the way of distinct personality. I kind of like that, where he’s just some dick, but he can often feel like they just needed a generic baddie without a super clear M.O.

That was my intention, I’m happy it worked!

The mask is a little "flat" but I like it because it generates a nice contrast with the details of the gun and his costume!

HeartisttheArtist responds:

I’m glad, because I intentionally left it flat! It doesn’t look the best, but I’m glad it achieved the intended effect I was going for.

Really great piece! I like the contrast of the shine on the gun with the dark of his outfit. The texture is really nice. It feels a little plain on the chest area. His mask is also missing the fade it has which I feel adds to the feel of his character. The best part I would say is the shading of the outfit. Overall still really good as expected.

HeartisttheArtist responds:

Thank you for your honest, helpful feedback! Glad to know that I got the texturing right, that's what I spent the most time on lol
I did actually keep the face and chest "clean" so that the white of his mask and logo would be more striking. Looking at them now, they do stand out a little too much. Thank you for being willing to point that out while still being constructive!
