Reviews for "Mother's Sword - Web Demo"

its true hi guts this is peak

im commenting for points

i have a lot of criticism here:

-the controls are pretty awkward and convoluted. so many random letters assigned to various functions

-blocking at moment of strike never stunned anyone. it just blocked me from taking damage but then they'd swing right after

-the music is cacophonous. you really need better melodies/instruments and stuff needs to be in different keys

-reaching the first upgrade spot and having 17 currency and the cheapest upgrade costing 250 was absolutely insane

-i couldn't full screen despite it being an option. i understand why. but i don't really care? the game is far too small on a 4k display. if i have to zoom in, the display settings of a game are poorly designed.

-it makes no sense that i can block at the time of being attacked (which as i explained earlier is pointless anyway) but i can't hold down block to keep my block active.

Please address these issues and I will take a second look.

Thanks for your feedback!

A little bit of a learning curve, but really fun little Souls-inspired piece once I got into the swing of things with parry timing. Definitely a very solid core, and the full game should be a lot of fun. I like the conceit where you need to hit enemies to get resources (I guess that's derived from Hollow Knight and similar). The animations are appealing and readable. Sound design is great - I love the resonant clang that you get from a successful parry.

A few nitpicks I would make: the keyboard controls are quite hard to use layout-wise, and I clicked too fast through the tutorial screen to see what the heal button was. Once I switched to a controller the game flowed a lot better.

The bigger issue is that the boss run got a little frustrating. Sure, it was useful to have some enemies to break to regain magic, but compared to other Souls-like games where it's fairly easy to dodge past enemies, here it felt like a bit of a chore to go through several screens before I could take another go at the boss. I realise 'boss runs good/bad' is a matter of some disagreement, but I wasn't convinced it added much to the game here.

All that said, that's mostly just tweaking stuff. The fundamentals are all there. The backgrounds look good, especially with the cloudy backdrops. The boss had an interesting moveset. I look forward to seeing it more fleshed out with settings and enemies, and what the story will end up being! Nice work!

This game plays with so much lag that it makes it difficult to enjoy. The music was alright. The visuals couldn't really be enjoyed while the game was so difficult to control. If it were more responsive, I certainly might have enjoyed it.
