One way to decribe it

There is only one way to describe what this song reminds me of. Pure, captured, distilled, essence of anger. Every note of the song is just dripping with a kind of sorrowful rage. It is an incredibly complex sound and at first it was hard to dissect. First off, the heavy drums in the background of the song set the tone with an agressive, angry sound. The second thing I noted was the strings section; at first all I heard was the quick notes, but upon concentrating, I noticed something else in the background. The short, quick repeating notes from the beginning to 0:51 have a uniquely noble and yet almost urgent sound, as if they are accompaning the beating of running feet on stone. However, there is another part of the string section that almost got lost in the shuffle that is a continuous two note rhythm that really lends the tone of urgency to the piece. Finally, the brass section accompanying the percussion added to the anger of the heavy drum. Overall, a complete sound and a technically perfect piece.

As far as mental imagry, this piece provides much as fodder for the imagination. The beginning of the piece brings to mind a proud warrior betrayed by those he once called friend in the midst of a heated battle. The warrior, overcome, flees from his foes, and at last finds himself alone, in a forgotten grove. Kneeling amonst the shards of his broken honor, the warrior draws his sword and vows upon his blood to revenge himself upon those whom he trusted and was betrayed. He rises form the ground and runs to meet his foes, for he knows that the most dangerous foe is the one with nothing to lose.

Very professionally done maestro. Keep up the good work.

MaestroRage responds:

I liked the last sentence you wrote here Denver "The most dangerous foe is the one with nothing to lose". Truer words have never been spoken.

I am glad you were able to decipher all the layers of this piece. To be honest I was surprised you were able to catch them :)! I put a lot of subtle, small melodies and the such in the background, and of course because they are there purely for support of the main feel, they are often skipped by the listener.

The story was one I could see very well. It is quite close to my image, though the ending for my story is a rather bitter one. I hope in your story, the knight comes out victorious, for I feel it should at least once, survive the onslaught thrown against it.

Thank you for your review, I am glad you liked it!

A personnal experience...for you...

I must admit when I heard this piece I heard it after reading your review in which your parents see your powerful talent as a disease in which they wish to 'cure' you of. So here is my story for you Maestro. You are sitting at your computer, hard at work at your masterpieces of music obviously. Suddenly you hear strange noises coming from downstairs. Your parents are home early! You quickly save all your pieces to a jumpdrive, knowing full and well that they are heading upstairs to see what you're up to. You quickly save not only your pieces put also your music-making programs to the jumpdrive and toss it underneath your pillow hopeing and praying that your parents won't find it. But just before you can hide the window for the program your parents enter through the door and are surprised but expectant at what they see on your screen. Alas, you have been discovered yet once again! Your parents give you practically the same lecture once again on how this 'habit' of your is interfering with your school, homework, tests, finals [when you have them that is ;)] and your father is quick to delete your program and music pieces files on your computer. They warn you that if they catch you again the consequences will be much worse. And as you sit on your bed thinking and possibly wondering if this hobby is really worth all the trouble it puts you through. You close your eyes and think really hard and in the end you refuse to stop. You refuse to let such a talent be put to waste and be denied! You get up, grab the jumpdrive, install in into the computer and continue as you did before for that talent...that power that lives within you...refuses to let you give up and your consience urges you forward!
P.S. Remember, this is a image I got in my head. This is almost entirely based on what you told me that your parents will go completely out of their way to weed this talent of yours out of your system. If you are at all insulted by this please let me know and I apologize in advance. Wether your parents would actually act like this, I don't know. Like I said, this is just the story I got. Keep up the good work...

MaestroRage responds:

no no, don't worry I don't get offended easily, and an image somebody gets from a piece is by no means any kind of ground to get offended by.

They would probably go this far, if not further, but I am pretty good at hiding what I do, so I am fairly confident they won't know until I want them to (if I ever want them to that is...)

But you do have one critical element right in this image. I have absolutely no ability to stop at this point. These stories, these images, are no longer suppressible in my head. Which I guess is a good thing!

Thank you for the review Zen, I am glad you liked the piece.

Wonderful

Nice opening, the long tones seem awkward at first but later it really mix well. Like the bell tones and the offbeat rythem. very dramatic and fast paced like marching men. quick transitions that just fit flawlessly. Nice little retard at the end. Overall this piece is a nice eriee tune that has its ups and downs, the ups covers the downs verywell! Great job again!

MaestroRage responds:

I did enjoy the retard (ritardo? I don't now exactly how it is spelled), and that was in fact the very first time I used something like that. My friend Lacrioso, who also submits here, does it a lot, and does it very very well. So I looked into his melodies and I was able to learn a lot from them!

More Timpani!!!!!!!!!!!!

This one seems less "clear" than the others I've heard, but otherwise I like everything about it.

It opens up with a nice violin melody. Brass instruments and more strings. Very nice work. You music provides that rushing-into-battle feeling. I wish you had ignored that pico feel nonsense and entered the MAC with something like this. You could have easily beat most of the contestants (if not all). In other words, its a great battle song but I'm glad I didn't have the extra competition =X

I like the percussion throughout the song. I see you got some tubular bells going in there too - can't go wrong with that! Why not some more timpani here and there...?

At whatever point - the song completely changes into some kind of interlude - the word genius popped into my head. I loved it and the choir sounds nothing less than fantastic. I very much liked the ritardo (i think thats the term) on the violin before the end. Awesome, I don't know how you did it so well without making it sound shitty. I know I've tried slowing down a song and got pretty bad results. Maybe its in tempo and you made some longer notes... hard to tell just by listening. Either way good work.

I very much enjoyed this piece and I'm at the point where I write my criticism... but theres not much to say. I think some parts, especially with in the intro and where the percussion hits, it sounds unclear. Most of your songs generally sound better as well... don't know what exactly it is. Doesn't really hurt you at all though.

When I think about what I would add to this all I could thing of was crash or some other kind of symbols. I don't know how good that would sound... but just a thought. Also, more timpani! Can't go wrong with more timpani (just kidding... or am I...? I don't really know anymore.)

Well, despite my poor attempt to make criticism, its still 100 times better than I could do. Perfect 10/10 here. I knocked one off of diversity and clarity: Clarity I explained already and diversity was not quite 100% but plentiful, nonetheless.

Your work has inspired me much in my Newgrounds lifetime - although I don't believe I have taken time to drop any reviews... Oh look at me getting all serious. But really, I like all of your songs and you always take time to review a few track and post on the forums from time to time. Thats respectin' right there mang, keep it up.

Well anyways, 5 and a download - for personal interest not numbers. Take it easy and keep the god ones rollin' (I think I said the same thing to the last song I reviewed... ha.)

MaestroRage responds:

ah, thank you kindly for the review Hybris *or Hibris as you signed :D*.

You really wanted to hear more timpani eh? I can't blame ya, I wanted some more punishing percussion myself, but I didn't have much more, and on top of that the lower end of the frequency spectrum was already at it's limits. You thought having this amount of percussion made it unclear, you should have heard it with the other hammer sounds I put in there.

Distortion all around D:!!!

I should have added crashes :/. No excuses for that, simply never came to mind whilst building it.

And to be honest, this song has also a few failed pico loops in it :O!! The beginning was a pico loop revamped, and most of the end was a pico loop, but it was too defiant, and pico doesn't defy, he destroys.

But oh well, next time maybe.

I'm glad you found inspiration in these works Hybris. I hope I can put up more things that invoke new and interesting stories in you, as that is what they are here for.

Thank you for your review, I am glad you liked it!

PS. I just noticed there IS a clarity issue isn't there... maybe I should have exported it at a higher bitrate...

Solid

This is a song that seems to show the short explanation of the song in an epic story form. It would make great background song that plays while the image shows the progression of time. Excellent sound. It has already put a story in my head. Keep it up.

MaestroRage responds:

I am glad you could think of a story while listening, for that is after all what these pieces are here for. To let you, if even for one minute, live somewhere else.

Thank you for the review, i'm glad you liked it :D!
