I'm guessing that the code for movement is something along the lines of an if/then statement that checks left first, cause once I go left I can never go right again. I can walk right and THEN go left if I start the game that way, but as soon as I even tap left I'm walking left permanently.

Do you happen to have any joystick to keyboard programs running? A stray analog stick could be constantly pressing the 'A' key, sending your character left all the time. Does this happen with both players if you select bro-op mode? Does the character always go right if you hit the right button first? Any info will help!
Setting custom controls in this is literally the most frustrating experience of any game I've ever played. Fix it. It's awful. I can't even play the game because I can't set controls.

You make a good point! The controls should not change the menu controls, which makes it hard to set the controls if you get something you don't like. The controls screen should only change the in game controls. Thanks for the feedback!
EDIT: we did a new build of the game - the latest downloadable build has some menu fixes and tweaks - I'll update the newgrounds build as well.
Games too hard bro, couldn't get past the second boss :\

The control layout is awkward to the point that the game is almost unplayable. I don't know why developers keep using the space bar as the jump button when its one of the most out of place keys on the keyboard, especially if you expect rapid fire shooting as well. At the very LEAST including the option to change the key layout would have been appreciated.
And no "use joy2key and a controller" is NOT a proper response to thoughtless keyboard layouts.

there is an option in the main menu to change keyboard controls to whatever you wish Donny. It is labelled "Controls". I'm sorry that space is an inconvenient place for you - we initially had controls at j - shoot, k jump l dash but feedback from our beta test suggested that space felt better for the majority of our players.
