Reviews for "The Old Ash Tree"

alright

would be good, but man was your whispering ever annoying.

The video spoils this somewhat.

I wish I had read the poem first.
The rhyming is odd and unsettling, in that it drifts into a pattern only to break it again. The tree's contribution to Eliza's grave suspicion that her mother had hung herself coincides with where the poem begins to rhyme again, bringing a sense of certainty and conclusion. And then the twist and the last four lines hit, leaving the reader with a mysterious and disturbing revelation and cliffhanger, without actually telling us what the hell happened. Then we lose a bit of our sanity wondering what will happen to Eliza. It's creepy and it's moving, and it definitely works.
I think that the animation is too in-your-face, especially at the end. Don't get me wrong, I think that the animation was great and lent to what the reader of the poem should feel, but it showed too much. Even just having the tree twitching slightly and ending it there would have made it work spectacularly. Instead, you went for the shock factor which, while admittedly jarring, just didn't have a lasting effect on me because I know exactly what happened. (Eliza's blank, passive expression works well though, as if she simply gives up on life after the deaths of her parents, which is something we don't get in the poem.)

Well that's the end of my long-winded review . Nice work on this, and have a good one :)

Too predictable

To be blatantly honest, this wasn't very effective at being creepy. I could tell from the very thumbnail and the name that the tree was going to kill someone, and from there on out watching this it wasn't hard to predict what was going to happen next. Not to mention that the voice acting makes the whole film feel like it's trying too hard to be scary. The story wasn't very interesting to being with either, I mean a tree that kills people, hasn't this been done before a million times? Also, the typical black and white film was very boring and again done before.

You get a 6 because it was a very mediocre flash, nothing special.

Here's what I think...

+The art style wasn't half bad, nothing I can really complain about.

+The idea was a solid one, creepy premise and everything.

- The narration was rather weak, in both tone and delivery. The narrator was reading with a rhyming scheme when no rhyming words were present. This seems to be more along the lines of free-verse and not rhyme poetry (if its even poetry.)

- You need a better voice actor/ your voice actor needs more practice

Not bad

I liked the style of the art, but I think the pacing was much too rushed especially towards the end. Also the whispering voice over would have been much better if it was more relaxed and less forced. I can tell because I do a lot of voice over work and it sounds like you were whispering very loudly to make up for not having a very sensitive mic.
