Reviews for "Dante's Inferno: Canto I"

Nice!

High production visuals! This looks like an HBO family special, and I mean that in the best way possible.

The voiceovers are actually quite good and the art is enjoyable. I'll definitely watch the next one you make.

Impressive

You have done a very good job of animating the first canto from Inferno. You really should do the rest; if you maintain the same standards; you will be like a modern Gustave Doré. Graphics and style were impeccable. Sound was good, although I did detect a slight skip in the voice acting around the point Virgil tells Dante he must pass through Hell. It could just have been my speakers, however.

Interactivity is non-applicable for movies. As for humour, I found Dante's reactions to the beasts to be slightly amusing as well as realistic: suddenly finding oneself face to face with a leopard, a lion, and a she-wolf, whether they be actual animals or embodiments of capital sin, would make most people gulp and cower in fear.

The sign above the entrance to Hell is not wrong, as some people have stated. It depends on your translation. In the translation I read, the epitaph stated, "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here." That is the most familiar phrasing. However, some other translations may render it differently. Or if you translated it from the Italian yourself, you might not translate it exactly that way. Some other person stated something about Virgil being black. That is false, both in posterity and in your movie's depiction. Virgil was rendered quite well, albeit I never envisioned him as having white hair. I think that if you had made him look middle-aged, it would have been better. But as you are the artist, it is your license to depict the epic poet as you envision him.

Overall, you did an excellent job on this. You should definitely work on animating the other cantos. It will be a challenge to depict the circles of Hell and the Malebolge in an appropriate manner: showing them in all their horror and grotesqueness, but yet keeping faith to Dante's work. However, I have the utmost confidence in your abilities should you choose to take upon that endeavour.

I really enjoyed this interpretation

The first canto was always something difficult for me to picture, but I enjoyed your depiction of the woods, as well as the characters of Dante and Virgil. The sins that each animal represents is still debated though and while I found the same connections as you did when i read it, there are several possible interpretations of which sin is represented by which and I've heard some good arguments for she wolf being fraud. I understand there was probably no way to incorporate the different possibilities into a flash short though unless you were to remain ambiguous about the meanings.

Good idea, a bit short.

definitely worth making more of. I liked it but you should do more than just the one cantos per episode.

A great find!

I'm so happy that someone decided to do an animation of the Inferno. I'm currently reading it now and I'm about 2/3 done. It's an excellent book.
I hope the whole book is done in animation.
