Reviews for "The Halloween Hunt"

Interesting at first, but lots of problems

The game was interesting at first, but after playing it for a bit I noticed several problems.

1. Raising Battle Levels will make the monsters stronger, but the rewards for defeating harder monsters are questionable. (coins won are great to horrible. 190~2000 at the final level)

2. Getting new weapons doesn't seem to do anything. No graphics change, no noticeable damage increase)

3. Damage dealt to you are totally random, you will get 1-shotted if you get an unlucky crit.

4. Why can't WE do CRITS?

5. Normal attack and Magical attacks are obsolete once we get skills. What's the point of them existing if we never use them? If I run out of energy at the boss I'm already dead anyway.

6. The final boss is OVERPOWERED. If he crits you it's a 1-shot.
Getting the levels and stats to defeat him is a terrible grind. Grinding make the game extra boring. Add the random coins won and it's extra tedious.

7. Only 5 types of monsters, and most of them are from final fantasy and breath of fire. Get more variety.

The game needs some serious balancing issues. If you want to get into more serious game creation, try resolving them in the next game.

I expect more from Armor Games

(note that this review refers mainly to the actual game portion, the introduction was fine). This is by far the worst game from Armor Games I've ever played. Aside from the intro, there is no story line. The battles are repetitive and the enemies are all the same (aside from what they look like). The maximum amount of damage enemies deal can be as much as four times the minimum, and there is no real consistency with the gold given as a reward. All enemies get stronger as you increase stats and levels, so you seem to be upgrading your hero for no gain. The last dragon is also ridiculously hard, requiring far more time spent grinding enemies then navigating the small and uninteresting "dungeons." Lastly, the music during the game is the same clip repeated over and over again (which isn't necessarily that bad), except that the clip doesn't loop smoothly back to the beginning.

Also, given that this game is from Armor Games, a large portion of the code for the game is most likely reused from other games, leading me to believe this one was pushed out without too much thought or testing (just to get a Halloween game out).

Entertaining and original, but marred by flaws.

I overall thoroughly enjoyed this game, however, I did have some gripes with it:

The battle menu was annoying in that if you press Go Back in the Skills submenu, you set yourself up to accidently hit the Escape option.

The graphics were a little too simple, in my opinion. They could have been a lot better. Also, many of the battle animations were the same, with the exception of some added sound effect. This was slightly disappointing, to say the least.

The Final Boss was insane as opposed to evey other enemy. I finally managed to beat him using a combination of Concentration and successive Overdrives, which dealt 6100+ damage per hit. 25000 HP and a disgusting attack power for this boss detracted from the enjoyment because of his ridiculousness. I suggest toning him down a bit.

Also, the enemies' damage and the coins dropped were far too random. They need to be within a controlled limit. Sometimes I would be hit for 100 damage, other times, over 2000! The coins operated in a similar fashion.

Besides these key elements, the story was unique and the gameplay, while flawed, was still enjoyable. I applaud you for your efforts!

4/5

Revenge is a dish best served cold.

This game was awesome, truly. I just didn't give it a 10 because of some minor flaws on it. I'll list what I think that could be better in this game:

- Monsters hit criticals way too frequently.
- The animations used in this game are way too simple, I've seen many flashes with this kind of simple animation before. I'm not saying it's your obligation to be a good programmer and artist, it's just a suggestion. In case you take it, I suggest you try to make animations more smooth and less "stand arms up - dash into the enemy - hit the enemy - dash back".
- Monsters hit you for too much damage later in the game, they can almost 1-hit you with a critical.
- I didn't notice any difference in my Defense when I used the Your Defense skill. Also, that name "Your Defense" is kinda weird...

But I LOVED the story.

My final stats:
All skills
Best weapon
Battle Level 7
Power 15
Vitality 16
Mana 15
Magic 15
