Yeah, there are two other allies you can find. It's a little harder to unlock them but you'll find a way. Sounds like you're doing pretty well, keep it up.
Remember if you get more than 2 allies, you can go to GC's house to switch between them.

There IS a save system. Every time you get to a saving well your game is saved. The first one's at GreenCastle's house.
