Reviews for "The Big Fat Tutorial"

Hmm...

Didn't load for me :( The scores I gave were for the preloader :D

Helbereth responds:

It wouldn't load for me when I first submitted it. I had to delete my cookies and temp net files for it to get past 77%.

Thanks for the review on the preloader. Getting it to work took almost an entire day (I'm inept about actionscript), so it's good to know I didn't waste my time. =)

It's Good..

It's a good tutorial but it doesn't stand up to others like _ULTIMATE TUTORIAL 2_ which has everything. Maybe if you make a sequel, make it include stuff for beginners (Motion Tweens?) and for advanced people.

Helbereth responds:

I wasn't aiming at being that comprehensive. This is mostly stuff that I couldn't find in the tutorials section - believe me I looked.

I had to figure out backgrounds, masking, rain (you'd think there would be tutorials for rain) and gradient animation through trial and error - because I needed to.

Also, if you noticed, I went over motion tweens in the pricess of making faeries (how do you think I made the wing flap). A lot of stuff is explained as part of other lessons - stuff that I don't think needs a tutorial on its own. I've seen enough motion tween tutorials with a box moving across the screen -- really I have.

I also couldn't find a tutorial that used actual objects one might actually use when animating. I've never seen anyone make a box slide across the screen except in the crudest submissions entirely based on the tutorial they just read -- and those get blammed.

I also saw no real need to make another walk cycle tutorial. I do believe there are hundreds on newgrounds alone.

I do plan to make a sequel, but I will be staying FAR away from tutorial stigma. I may include something like a walk cycle, but it will be as part of full character animation... not by itself. Motion tweens are something you just end up explaining along the way (if you're any good at teaching, anyway).

good for newbies...

and me. I donĀ“t have a Flash yet, but tell me wich version is the best and easiest? well, make more for newbies!

Helbereth responds:

I've only ever used Flash MX 2004, so I can't really make an educated guess other than to say that since it's basically the latest version it's likely the easiest (most streamlined) version.

It does carry a hefty price tag, though ($500). I understand that Flash MX and Flash 5 are still available and still viable (not to mention less costly). However, you won't be able to take advantage of that scripted camera.

Good luck, and thanks for the review!

I love this tutorial.

This is an awesome tutorial and its helping me learn flash. Keep up the good work buddy!

PS. Did anybody find the secret easter egg in the masking section!

....

uuuuhhh it was ok

Helbereth responds:

2/112... not bad.
