Here is its eulogy, a collection of the kind words written about it while still among the living. They shall live on forever in its place.

This has been the most difficult film I have ever made, because its meaning is very true to my soul. For too much of my life I have been a mindless consumer of time. Hopelessly placing value in things that never gave an ounce of value back. Now that I am older, I worry endlessly that this new generation is making the same mistakes I now deeply regret.

In the end, I hope my message is honest and clear. Whether you agree with me or not, please share you thoughts, spark meaningful discussions, and share this film with everyone you know.

Special thanks to all those who have been my strength - and to all of you for taking a moment to open your minds =)

Amazing...

There are no words....to explain how amazing this was..

I'm going to find some way to show it to my friends :P

I have no arguement against this...you are completley right....we create all of this technology and enjoyment...blatently unobvious of the fact that the one thing that we want the most in the time spent with it, is consuming our lives...

But there is the fact that....there ARE healthy gamers....the ones who...Not only respect the dignity that they are playing into the game....but the communities within' it that they share with friends and families....If we can look past all of the hardcover pretenses....Some games....bring us together....as Friends and Family.

Good flash, but...

I feel like you are confusing correlation with causation somewhat here.

If the kind of people you are describing (the ones that spend all day playing videogames) stop playing all of a sudden, can you guarantee that they will be able to find something else to do? Can you guarantee that they will be able to use the time thus freed to connect with other people, create something "worthwhile", etc. etc.?

Videogames don't create loners. Even before the first videogames were created, there were people very similar to the ones you described, even if they occupied their time with something other than videogames. I prefer to think of the situation thus: Playing videogames gives these people something to do, when otherwise they might not have anything to do. Playing videogames (especially online ones) gives them a chance to connect with other people of similar interests, when otherwise they might not be able to do so in real life. The fact that videogaming sometimes correlates with a lack of social life does not imply that videogaming causes a lack of social life; one cannot rule out the possibility that it is the lack of social life that drives them to gaming, since gaming is much better than doing nothing at all.

tl;dr: Think of videogaming as an opportunity to connect with others given the absence of real-life connections, not as something that actively competes with real-life opportunities.

You are very right. Social fear is the issue, videogaming is the escape. But personally I blame my crutch of videogaming from keeping me from confronting that fear all these years.

I had to login and write a comment bc of you sir

This is truly the best persuasive animation on this entire web site. What Brian explains is entirely true! If you have the passion for gaming, that is great! just try not to loose yourself in the virtual world that consumes much of your life to gain nothing useful in the real world. Live a little and get into some trouble while you still can because we can't go back in time and regain what is already lost. One chance, one life, live now. Thank you for this animation Brian Schmoyer and hopefully it will get through to some of the people who havn't woken up yet.

You know, it's odd to hear people use my full name. Oh well.

Thanks for your kind words!

Wow, nobody could have said it any better

Through out my years, I have myself experienced a few of these things, and he is totally correct. Every day, I see my friends, and all that they talk about is how they unlocked achievements on their Xbox, or passing a game in a short amount of time, and even boasting about being better than one another. Watching this made me realize even more, how much they are actually not achieving anything in reality, they are just throwing away precious moments in which they can do something good with their lives! Thank you for opening our eyes, Brian, you are 100% correct! Awesome job with this vid!

Can a flash get a standing ovation?

Wonderful! Bravo! So true! God help me to get off my behind!
