I think it's cool that you are not solely a digital artist and you obviously equally competent with physical mediums. I mean, digital art is nice, don't get me wrong, I just like when you produce a piece that you can look at and hold and it just feels more real to me.

No doubt on that though! I had been glued to digital art for years and didn't even try physical mediums until last October, then for inktober I kind of just got hooked on it. It's definitely a different feeling to create something physical without layers and ctrl+z. :P

Normally I don't post a final piece in here unless it's just going to be a sketch, but I thought I would to see if anybody had any ideas for this? Or does it look good as is?

Here's a side-by-side so you guys can see what it used to look like:

Canon ball poses from the front are usually avoided in illustration as they're not so easy to read and are difficult to draw for so little impact value.
Having the creature viewed from the side gives the elements in the composition more purpose and connection.

The space is fine. If the canvas becomes a square rather than a rectangle it will give off the impression of a logo or icon rather than an expressive piece.

This happens because of the balance of negative and positive space and atmosphere. It's like two scenes of a king in his small bedchamber compared to him being in his grand throne room. One becomes more focused and personal while the other shows his significance compared to everything else.
