Not sure if this question should go here, but I'll try anyway. I have painted with acrylics for awhile now, and I like them OK, but I want to try oils. What should I buy and do? Do I need different brushes, what paints should I get, and are there any books that I should check out?

If you are going to be painting in oils, be prepared for some really tedious procedures.
Each brush stroke needs some alkalid on it, i don't know where you get this, but it's something that keeps the paint from cracking when you add more paint ontop of it or something. And you need to wait for each layer to dry, which can take a few days each time, till you can start painting on it again, and you need to clean the brushes with mineral spirits(thats what we used in class at least) or theyll get hard and chunky on you.

I am not a fan of oil painting, i simply don't have the patience for it.

Just curious, because i will have to use it in my class next year. Doesn't sound fun

Its honestly not all that different from acrylics. Oils are much more versitile as far as mediums go though. You can add all sorts of different mediums to the paint to change its qualities. And you dont have to wait for each layer to dry (it takes about 3 days for straight paint, no mediums, to dry fully) You do need either turpentine or Gamsol (or some sort of mineral spirits) to clean the brushes, and you CAN NOT use the same brushes once they have been used for oils. Oils make your brushes unfit to use with acrylics, you can use the same types of brushes though. I recommend just asking the people at the store and guage what you need based on what they say.

My personal kit looks something like this, and would be good for beginners to get.
Glass Pallet (reusable, just scrape paint off and wipe clean with a bit of Gamsol)
Gamsol (to clean brushes and whatnot)
Paint (whatever colors you want)
Variety of Brushes (any you want, just designate these as your oil brushes)
Liquin (A medium that speeds drying and makes the paint go on smoother)
Galkyd (dries even quicker and makes the paint shiny and transparent in a way)

I was watching this movie I had on my DVR called 'The Notorious Bettie Page' and it is a very great and interesting film about the pin up girl Bettie Page and her life. It's great if you are in photography and what not.

I wish I knew of this movie earlier.

If all goes well I might have a job teaching a few art classes at this art program place nearby. The people taking the classes are paying for them with their own money so they obviously want to be there. There are no grades, its not like a school or anything.

My questions to you guys are:
What are somethings in art classes that you have taken that you really enjoyed, and inversely, really hated? Things that the teacher did or projects that you either really liked, or absolutely hated.

I get to make my own lesson plans and everything so I'm just trying to get an idea of things that others liked/disliked in an art class so I can keep them in mind to try to keep stuff interesting without making too many mistakes.
