About the cd collection and artist support, no problem with that.

That's a bit contradictory. So if you only support musicians you like, does that mean you pirate music you don't like? Why would you do that?

You're messing things up now, if I supported every artist I liked I would have spent tons of money which of course I don't have.
(Sorry for any grammar mistake, I'm very sleepy)

Also, as long as I remember, iTunes sucks big black fucking cocks on supporting artists.

When you download music from a sharing website for free, you are supporting the artist by actually listening to their music. The artists don't even make a large sum of money from selling CDs, so when we download music, we're actually just hurting the record companies. The artists make a huge percentage of their earnings from playing gigs. It's not like we can torrent a true live performance.

If that's the case, tough shit. People shouldn't download all the music they want just because they're poor. Would you use that excuse for other things?

Well I'm clean with that. I can't recall buying a single track from iTunes. My only purpose for iTunes is the iPod and if I never needed iTunes to use it, I wouldn't have it to begin with. I'm happy enough with Windows Media Player.

On the whole downloading music thing, I for one, tend to download a discography, give it a listen, and buy the CDs I like most. I love to collect CDs, and unfortunately I live nowhere near a record store, so I often have to order stuff online. Damn shipping charges :(

What I'm trying to say is, people SHOULD download music for free, spreading it easily and making the artist's work heard everywhere.

That's a pretty poor excuse really. Obviously if you didn't know about the artist you wouldn't be downloading their stuff in the first place.

There are plenty of ways to discuss and advertise artists without pirating their hard work.

I usually pirate music, and then if it's good, I'll buy it later on. Unless it's an artist I can trust to release something awesome, then it might just be a straight away purchase. For example, I bought Opeth's 'Blackwater Park' shortly after pirating it, now I own most of their discography, and I plan on purchasing their upcoming album without pirating it. There's a possibility I wouldn't have done any of that without pirating their music first.

Here is my method, and I feel it's fairly reasonable:

1. Acquire music and listen to it.
2. Delete it if I don't like it.
3. If I do like it, try and buy the CD direct from the artist.
4. If I cannot buy direct from the artist, try and see them live, where I can buy CD and delicious T Shirts.
5.If they don't play near me sucks for them because they can't take my money.

It's a website based around BitTorrent interviewing an artist who got popular because of BitTorrent. I agree that the RIAA over reacts to crap like piracy, but it's still a biased article.

CDs are only a small dent in a band's profits. If you really want to support them, go to their shows where they get a larger cut of the money. Jesus christ it's not hard.
I pirate and buy music, deal with it.

It's probably because they stopped making the 80gb like 3 years ago. I think the only size they sell now is 160gb?

I didn't know that, I just assumed they got me a better size. Last I checked they had 40 and 80 gig ipods. I guess now 160 is $250, and I thought before that an 80 gig was that much, so that must mean that either Apple started to cheapen things (not likely) or that storage is getting cheaper (more likely).

classical music is very calming apparently. and it'll look great right next to all this A7X and Offspring.

I don't mean to be trolling around here. I don't actually have a set opinion on piracy, and any opinion of it really intruigues me. It affects different musicians in different ways. I definitely think Artists need to wise up and consider using a pay-what you like system, and the price of CDs really needs to start dropping. I hate having to pay $20+ for a CD when bands charge $4 or $5 for a digital download.

If only record labels would start actually learning something from piracy.

Piracy and stuff feels dirty to me for the most part

So I don't indulge

I also don't want to risk any kind of malignant software getting on my computer

Besides, I'm happy with the system I have going right now, I might buy an album sometime in the future, but who knows

A lot of it is pretty intense, and some of it is boring, but it's overall good. Any modern music looks weird on your charts right after a classical composer.

I interpreted that comparison as You trying Olivers soda; loving it, buying your own and letting your friend have a bit of yours, then they in turn know about the soda and buy their own

That's not how it works, the friend bought the soda first. Just like with pirating, someone has to buy it first before they can share it.

I don't see anything wrong with that as long as your doing it to some huge rich supermarket and not a small independent store. Also, what SomaGuye said.

Pirating is not theft, it's copyright infringement.

That's what was particularly vexing about those anti-piracy commercials, where they were like "YOU WOULDN'T STEAL A CAR! PIRATING MUSIC IS THE SAME AS STEALING A CAR!"

It's fucking not because if you still Bill's car, Bill now has 0 cars, while you have 1. Theft. Whereas downloading music, Bill still has his copy of Country Western Christmas Classics, and now so do you.

More than anything it's the underhanded dirty tactics that Record companies employ to stop people from downloading, that have made me pro-piracy. They brought this upon themselves.
