Studies have been made about the incidence of likes on our own opinions (case 1, case 2). That's why I hide likes on Instagram and ignore Twitter public stats (Likes, RT and QRT). Having the option here would be pretty cool too.

So maybe not a mode, but a tag system of some sort that forces the artists to take it seriously and makes specific tags invisible unless the user actively switches it on. I say this because it's an actual problem for me (as a user, not a creator). I been out of the art portal for some time now because of this, even though i have a lot of tags (and users) blocked. This is not very effective, since tags are not mandatory. I'm currently only checking people that i already follow.
One solution that wouldn't require additional development (beyond broader implementation of blocked tags) would be to have moderators add a "fetish" tag whenever they catch something that isn't already tagged... One development option would be to put "Is this fetish art?" in the upload form and if they click YES then auto-populate a "fetish" tag if they don't already have one.

I've mentioned this in the past, but a tagging system like this for "A" submissions wouldn't be terrible.

If something like Score Mode came about I'd definitely upload to Newgrounds more. The latest Webdings short got a better score than expected to be honest.

Maybe if we see More Smiley Friends episode like even 6 or 7 episodes and u would have to pay to watch those “special” episodes. Could maybe work for games. If it’s because of porn, make a section that u got to pay for quality “porn” ask a % of it and u could probably get richer by getting people here more jobs instead of just contest. I don’t know, it feels slow and out dated. I’m not a business man I just say what I feel about NG at the moment. XD

Much thanks for the double XP!

Video Player Updates

@PsychoGoldfish updated the video player today to re-introduce post-roll video suggestions, which have been missing ever since we switched to a new video player. They’re utilizing larger thumbnails now, too.

An iPhone issue was fixed and video now plays in-page instead of forcing fullscreen. A bug in the scrubber timestamp was also fixed, if you had noticed weird numbers jittering around.

We hope everyone is enjoying the video player! NG processes videos at a higher quality than most sites, so your animation can look and sound as good as possible. You can also upload at 4K! Tell your animator friends.

Well I’m glad that the video player is being worked upon, I like this update since it’s debut. Well it’s great that it works now for desktop and mobile devices. Well I glad that now you can work with the movies/clips with quality up to 4K, I seriously never think that would be possible.

Flash Preservation Update

Newgrounds sponsors the development of Ruffle.rs, to run Flash content in the browser without Flash.

The latest Ruffle build went live last night and Domo-Kun Angry Smashfest is working. Text input is now supported in games like Nightmare House but text entry on mobile is pending. If you want to test a game with Ruffle, slap /format/flash?emulate=flash on the end of the URL, for example https://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/254456/format/flash?emulate=flash. If you can play all the way through and everything looks fine, let me know and I’ll enable Ruffle as the default!

Ruffle was created by @Mike as an open-source alternative to the Flash plug-in, free of all the legacy problems associated with Flash. Lots of smart people have gotten involved with the project and you can sponsor it with money or help as a Rust developer.

Also note that most of what people enjoy on NG nowadays doesn’t require Flash! Newgrounds is moving ahead into the future while also preserving our past.

Well is great that Ruffle is working alongside with NG. Anyways, I don’t think it’s ready for mobile from the looks of it. I was testing it out by playing this game:

Through my mobile device I couldn’t get it to work, perhaps the system still needs a lot of work. Also, for the ruffle donation, I wish that I could be a one-time donor instead of a weekly or a monthly donor, because I wouldn’t know on what will happen financially on my end.

Other Site Stuff

The under judgment list is overflowing with entries so we’re offering double XP from today until Monday, meaning you can vote on at least ten entries per day to gain 20xp, instead of the usual five entries and 10xp. Feel welcome to vote on more than ten things, though! You only get to vote on one president but here you can vote on thousands of things.

We might introduce scouting to games and movies, so scouted artists can bypass the judgment phase.

I’ve also been thinking, what if Newgrounds defaulted to not showing scores or voting bars but registered users could enable “Score Mode”, at which point they would see scores and voting bars? This is a compelling thought because a lot of people don’t engage with voting and a lot of artists don’t like having scores alongside their work, while at the same time community scoring really helps to surface a lot of the best stuff and we like to have as much scoring feedback as we can get. We have a lot of things on our plate before any of that, though.

Well thanks for the double xp week (not exactly, but you get the point), now I can get the new level before Christmas.

Well no further comment about the scout system that, adds for the movies and games, and hiding the score system yet for all submissions on NG. I probably will add this to my personal review. Well have a wonderful time NG admins!

looks like Crystals wasn't enabled for Ruffle but the dev had checked the box for "Touch Friendly" which made it act like it works on mobile (it probably would if your mobile device had the Flash plugin). It doesn't work with Ruffle yet but will have to revisit it when Ruffle is ready for it. I've disabled the Touch Friendly box for now.

There were some really good entries this year in the spooktacular contest. You're killin me with gifs having no zoom in feature on click like every other image format in the portal does.

A distant engine of hate is stirring....

On removing scores,

Maybe we could, but the scoring system is one of the things that sets Newgrounds apart as a media site and one of the things that draws me specifically to Newgrounds, both the fact that the scoring system is unique to Newgrounds and I would hate to see (or rather not see) the Tankman art next to the scores be hidden. Some might find it a little archaic (after all Youtube originally had a very similar rating system which it eventually removed) but I think it incentivizes critiquing which is lost when it comes to other social media sites. I'm fine with having the scores hidden as long as it doesn't trivialize the effect that the scoring system has. I'm just a little afraid that "feature creep" could end up killing score's relevance.

To mitigate the fall of the score system I think that we should have systems in place that remind users that the scoring system still exists.

such as:

-have it be a global setting that can be turned on and off, not something that has to be turned on for each video separately. because the latter would be very annoying.

-having a checkbox on the home page or in the taskbar, not buried somewhere in settings.

-have scores turned on by default for members but turned off for nonmembers since you need to login in anyways to do so.

-have newsletters/posts like this one that encourage people to vote, score, and review videos

Perhaps we can have the best of both worlds where users still score videos even though the scores are hidden and where people aren't afraid to post what they truly want to, but I find that unlikely outcome. Something will have to give and ultimately I think the scoring system will end up suffering. Personally I think it would be better to tell people to suck it up and take the reviews and scores with a grain of salt, after all they are there to help for the most part.

Bypass the only place where my movies get viewed? This would be optional I hope.

Otherwise I'm on board with everything else. I think I'd actually enjoy a world where I can tune out scores.

I have a question, and my apologies if it's a stupid question: if I make an animation in flash, should I still use Swivel to convert it to MP4 before I upload it here? Or is there no need for that now that we have Ruffle?

For animation without interactive elements, a video is ideal nowadays because it makes use of the video player features. If you want to be a Flash purist, you're welcome to stick with SWF. As much as I love Flash I have a strong preference for video nowadays for non-interactive animation.

Yeah!

I love flash movies with easter eggs.

You can't do that in videos.
