First "Emo" song you ever heard? 2016-09-07 23:56:08

And by "Emo" I mean any song that has to do with young people (high school/college age) dealing with depression and/or suicide.

For me, my first would have to be Jumper by Third Eye Blind.

Adam's Song by Blink-182 would have to be my second.

Not long after there was Linkin Park and all the other Emo groups.

So, what about you guys?

This one would have to be my first as far as I can remember.

I think it was when I saw a Club Penguin video with Faint by Linkin Park in the background.

Yes, I know.

"The Middle" by Jimmy Eat World is probably the first, if what I'm hearing is true and they are considered an emo band

But the term emo is such a weird umbrella term with no solid concrete absolute definition that everyone agrees on

None of those are emo bands though.

The first correct response in the thread. Jimmy Eat World is considered an emo band. Also I agree it's a term that's been thrown around so much as to have lost all meaning. People frequently use it as an insult when originally it was just a style of music, and people have misused the term for years to the point it's really very meaningless these days. It's pretty much if someone doesn't like something they just call it emo. They use it as a slur, the same way some people use "gay" as a slur.

I will dedicate and sacrifice my every-thing
For just a seconds worth of how my story's ending
And I wish I could know if the directions that I take
And all the choices that I make won't end up all for nothing
Show me what it's for
Make me understand it
I've been crawling in the dark
Looking for the answer
Is there something more
Than what I've been handed?
I've been crawling in the dark
Looking for the answer
Help me carry on
Assure me it's ok to
Use my heart and not my eyes
To navigate the darkness
Will the ending be
Ever coming suddenly?
Will I ever get to see
The ending to my story?
Show me what it's for
Make me understand it
I've been crawling in the dark
Looking for the answer
Is there something more
Than what I've been handed?
I've been crawling in the dark
Looking for the answer
So when and how will I know?
How much further do I have to go? (have to go)
And how much longer until I finally know? (finally know)
Cause I am looking and I just can't see what's in front of me
In front of me
Show me what it's for
Make me understand it
I've been crawling in the dark
Looking for the answer
Is there something more
Than what I've been handed?
I've been crawling in the dark
Looking for the answer

In that case, it was either Somewhere I Belong by Linkin Park or Bring Me To Life by Evanescence (don't remember which came first). 13 years later, and both are still among my all time favourite songs.

That one brings back memories of the first time I went to Maui; 10 years ago!

I also made a parody version of the lyrics:

So cross my 'T's and dot my 'I's.

Cross my 'T's and dot my 'I's!

Good times.

My first one went like, "I bleed it out, I dig it deeper just to blow me away."

I actually kinda like that song, anyone know what it is called?

Oh, might as well post the link.

It is my favorite early Linkin Park song.

I think the first "Emo" stuff that I heard was something by Tokio Hotel if I remember correctly.

Also, "Revolution der Generation" by Nevada Tan, if that counts

This thread makes me so sad. There's this whole genre of music out there that gets conflated with that Warped Tour shit.

I'm, no shit, an emo enthusiast, and have enjoyed learning about and listening to a wide variety of emo bands.

Going by the criteria laid out? Either Joy Division or The Cure, I had a sloppy period where Post-Punk/New Wave was all I listened to.

Going by a grognard's definition of Emo? Fugazi's "Bed for the Scraping".

Going by what most people mean when they say "Emo"? Either Thursday's "Jet Black New Year" or The Getup Kids' "I'll catch You".

I used to have a thing for emo girls, and if I'm being honest I totally still do.
