Dump Upgrade & Biz Talk and Stuff

We've been talking with NG supporters about what perks they would like to see and one popular suggestion is an increased Dumping Grounds limit. Starting now, supporters get 1gb of storage for their file shares!

For everyone who isn't a supporter - don't worry, lots of cool stuff is on the way for you. The majority of upcoming plans are for EVERYONE but we've been focusing intensely on supporter perks this month because we really want NG to be financially secure, now and forever.

Besides the supporter upgrades, we've been doing a lot of updates and overhauls in the ad space. Our main display ads have gone through some changes recently and we've also brought back... Relevant advertising on the adult rated content pages... Something we had gotten rid of many many years ago. It looks like it's going to be a huge help though. Who better to fill a hole than the adult industry, right? Sorry I couldn't help it.

There are also changes coming on the back-end with our video pre-roll ads that should improve results for artists and developers. We had a lot of setbacks in recent months because just about every video ad provider we were working with eventually hooked into a Google service, at which point the Google blacklist kicked in and blocked their ads on NG. Google doesn't allow NG on their ad exchange, which is a bit of a monopoly in the video ad space and a big part of our problem. But that sort of trouble makes NG more punk rock and awesome, RIGHT?!

I've also been chasing down some companies that owe payments, including two that got bought and have new management.

Besides new supporter perks such as level icon selection, a private forum and increased dump space, we also brought back and improved the flagging system this month. This week we updated to include PMs, so you can flag a PM and bring it to our attention. Keep in mind you can also block users, so block anyone you don't like and reserve flagging for especially disturbing / dangerous people and advertising spam.

Speaking of advertising spam, every single blog spam account from January 1, 2015 thru today has been DELETED. Also we are no longer serving ads on user pages. The ads were through the rev share system but barely anyone ever tracked any user page revenue, then we lost an advertiser this week because of some PORN on a user page. So it just isn't worth the risk and everyone probably prefers their user pages without ads. After we lost the advertiser I pulled a Kylo Ren and destroyed all the spam accounts. Someone had to pay.

Yup you'll keep the files... Checking with @liljim about how it currently handles the ongoing limit after expiration, will need to decide if it should just be a permanent limit increase or whether you would need to delete things back below the traditional limit if you want to upload something new (nothing would be auto-deleted).

Wow, sorry to hear about all the ad problems and the spam incident. The fact that these issues are the reality of the web really irritates me. I hope things go well for the site despite the setbacks! :)

I am pleased with this notion of flagging pm's. There's still old school phising for email adresses going on from time to time as well as the occasional shysters who simply do not have any business bothering people here imo.

Also a gig worth of storage is fantastic, you would not believe how much mileage i've gotten out of the dump over the years, it's just that damn useful.

Is there a way I can tell AdBlock to allow ads on adult-rated pages only? The ones I see so far are rather tasteful, and if I can help NG by looking at porn, I'm all for it :P

It troubles me that google is so anti-Newgrounds. They're just a bunch of big meanies. Sad to hear about those sponsors too. Obviously they are jelly of us being so punkrock and awesome. Deleting all the porn spam was a good call, keeps up appearance. I'm liking all of these updates!

I had google ads for my webcomic site and the only ads they would display were for "Russian women want to marry you, now!" or those stupid porn MMO's.

I see no problem with that. If people are already looking at adult content, they might as well see ads that is going to be catering to them

That's so greasy! I hate how Google uses their ads and YouTube as a way to shit on Newgrounds.

I hadn't come across any of these accounts, but there is no reason to keep that garbage around. You might as well chop them down as soon as they creep up. Letting them stick around just gives them impression that that bullshit is tolerated.

lmao XD I for one welcome these shady ads back with open arms! It just hasn't felt like home ever since the dubious propaganda I grew up seeing disappeared. Hope it brings in tons of revenue.

Good to hear (how) things are moving on the business front, albeit with the userpage porn setback... imagine if you had an AI that sifted through all posted images, and based upon if they were adult or not, put either shady adult ads or normal ones on that particular page. It'd be like that new system FB just introduced to help those with sight-deficiencies, but with a grand and improved purpose! :D

Really happy to see the dump size increased, that'll definitely come in handy, and looking forward to the expected gems Ludum Dare always seems to bring, Happy Saturday!

Sounds like potential for a Supporter perk there. :) I've always had the Sentbox as an archive though, and kept the inbox clean, no problems then. One feature I'd really love to see for PMs btw: the ability to download messages, individually or all at once. And search. Though if you could download them they'd be easy to search through too.

Back when we were kicked off Adsense years ago it was for inappropriate content on the site, but then years later I got us re-approved but never actually re-launched the ads on NG. When we set up the NG YouTube, I attached our Adsense to it, at which point they disabled it again and never gave me a good reason. Now when agencies approach them on our behalf to try and get us up and running, they say it's for suspicious click activity - which I guarantee we NEVER did anything like that - but it's also really strange because it feels like it's something they tacked on after the fact.

I could see the potential that a script kiddy could have pegged the ads on NG thinking he was helping / hurting us but if that happened we were never notified of it back when we were initially kicked off. My paranoid side says that YouTube just doesn't want another video sharing site surviving in their presence.

I think larger space for PMs should be a thing for all users instead of just for supporters, dump space up to 1GB for the people who've donated is fine and makes sense, gives them more space to submit their works in progress if they want it to be critiqued, messages however are just a neat way of keeping in touch, it would also be a bother to eventually have to go through them all just to see which ones we still need and which ones can be purged, my PM box isn't anywhere near being full but seeing it slowly fill up is a bit annoying, with a larger (or even unlimited) limit i'd be much more at ease, dunno if that would be possible.
