Pearl Harbor - Michael Bay trying to act like his movie is about love and sacrifice and not about explosions.
Crash - yeeesh where to begin.

Pretentious films though are more known as student art-like films that attempt to be really deep and introspective and edgy but are in all actuality absolute shit and just take themselves way too seriously. While technically yeah the star wars movies and some horror movies are pretentious in the sense that they take themselves a little too seriously and don't realize how over-the-top they are, that's kind of using the dictionary definition. Generally when you talk about a pretentious film it's more along the lines of The Seventh Seal or whatever

Idiocracy is pretty bad. It tries to be politically relevant but has absolutely no subtlety and does not capture the underlying causes of the problems which it is protesting - in a few decades it will be dated and irrelevant, to be forgotten indefinitely.

I thank you.

I fucking hated Pearl Harbor when it came out and I am still very against it. However the scenes with FDR and the Japanese planning their attacks are done very well. I think the only thing with Michael Bay is that he needs a filter. He can work well with another person.
Crash - yeeesh where to begin.
I will honestly say that I thought Crash was actually a really damn good movie and it only really got heavy criticism when it won the Best Picture Oscar at the Academy Awards. People wouldn't stop complaining about this movie and I don't understand why. It is a bit preachy I'll give it that, but certainly not pretentious, I've seen worse race-relation movies and I'll even admit I've seen better, one being American History X.

I'm not saying it wasn't, but like Pink Floyd, it's possible to be good and pretentious.
It is a bit preachy I'll give it that, but certainly not pretentious
I suppose this is more a matter of semantic understanding, then, because when I think of the difference between something being 'preachy' vs. merely informative, the difference tends to be the pretense of greater authority, import, or weight than the actual message carries.

The BBC's adaptation of "Millions" is the most pretentious film I've ever seen.
1) The depictions of saints in that film could have been expanded more.
2) The music was generic.
3) Some characters were annoying and were probably shoehorned in.
4) I can understand the whole notion behind some of us giving to less fortunate people in the Third World, but the way the film went on about it was pretentious.
Now mind you, they've done better films and shows than that -- Doctor Who, etc., etc. And also, they did one of my favourite, most heart-wrenching films of all time -- Shooting Dogs, which was about the Rwandan genocide. But Millions really fell far short.
Trash Humpers. When I saw it in the TV guide I was excited because it sounded like a comedy about some elderly rascals, but it ended up just being really weird and boring. Couldn't fully watch it, every scene made me cringe.

Actually, you may have a point here. The ironic thing is Evangelion in general was supposed to a criticism of the otaku lifestyle, yet in many otaku circles, characters like Rei and Asuka are essentially sex symbols and character archetypes that are pretty commonplace today. Whether it was out of spite or otherwise is still up for debate, but I'm sure that Anno didn't know that he was opening Pandora's box when he made Evangelion, considering that the Rebulid series seems to acknowledge this fact.
