Infuriating games 2012-12-12 22:42:08

I was going to make a different thread, but holy shit, after playing the HD remaster of Jak II, that's going to take a back seat for a while.

Jak II has got to be the most fucking infuriating game I have ever played. I got it back when it came out and beat it many many times. Of course, I have many fond memories of it, but I seem to have forgotten how goddamn obnoxious it was. Worse than Demon's Souls (when I hit my dying streak) and every arcade game ever made. Not just those awful escort missions that are infamous in games because the A.I. and pre-determined routes are retarded, but also missions and high scores that involve trial-and-error. You must play the damn thing and lose over and over again until you're a heartless, perfect machine. Namely, the racing challenges. Go through every ring without slipping up anywhere and beat it under the high score time for the maximum reward. FUCK. I still have to do some more of those until I get the platinum trophy and be done with that shit.

Alright, so, what games have you lot played that are obnoxious? I might list some more after I cool off and remember them.

My first run through of Dark Souls was probably the most frustrating for me, I had to learn the difficulty curve that most games don't have.

Rogue Galaxy. The maps were linear and empty, the guard button does fuck all, and enemies give out terrible EXP. I ragequit before I got out of some jail-like level but I doubt it got any better.

Also Graffiti Kingdom. It's not at all a hard game, it's cheap as fuck. Since the game is so short they like to litter cramped areas with just enough enemies and traps to slow down your game. This game can barely be considered a platformer and yet most of the levels require precision platforming. Usually you'll draw a monster with normal sized legs, but that makes for too slippery controls, so the platforming aspect is only possible if you draw a monster with tiny legs and equip the super jump. And even still they stick enemies on tiny platforms, so they will just knock you off before you can even land. The bosses all have the same attack strategy: ram the player into a corner.

Xenosaga I & II. I don't think I finished either of those games but easily beat the third one.

The original NES mario games. Mainly because of how hard they used to be. I still loved them to death though.

I feel like I should have a lot more, but these are the only two that come to mind right now.

Fuck, I need to mention QWOP in this thread. I'm awful at that game.

Fear Effect 2 was a pain in the ass...plus it didnt help that you had to keep going back and forth on the discs

The very first Hitman (a.k.a Hitman: Codename 47). I know it's the first game in the series, and remarkable for giving the pointers to the better of those games, but gawd DAMN! It has a variety of small-ish bugs (though it's understandable to some point, being an old game) and bad design choices (F.e you can't see your target on the map. Also the save-function being replaced by "lives" is just unforgiving). All in all, it's the only Hitman game (besides Abso) I haven't finished, being the source of most annoyance to me, and claiming this "honor" of being infuriating.

Also, Jak II when we played it with my friend when we were 9-10 yrs old. Though it wasn't nearly as difficult when I got it to myself.

I don't know how I went through it getting 125% back then. It's a nightmare now.

Jak II was one of the most frustrating games I've ever played I gave up on it for a year.

Sonic Adventure 2's space levels always pissed me off.

Devil May Cry 3 is just hard for no reason.

Super Meat Boy is amazingly frustrating to play. The levels with Bandage Girl are damned near impossible.

Look it up if you don't remember the craze about it a few years back. The game if free to download if you feel like torturing yourself. The game actually cheats to kill you buy doing complete bullshit that instantly kills you. The game is made to make you fail, so if you actually manage to win then you are a legend.

I've been playing it for a while, and while I agree it is trolly as fuck, it's all pattern memorization. I probably will never complete it because I haven't got the time to get good at it, but I never get mad at the game. I find it to be enjoyable to try a few stages at a time.

Now for a game that infuriates me. Mario Kart Wii.
Playing Mario Kart Wii with randomers has to be the most frustrating thing that the Wii can do. There's pretty much no reward for playing it; with friends, you have bragging rights, but with randomers, you can only assume the guy who passed you to win is a total douchebag in real life who probably sells drugs to kids.

MKW will tease you with victory, only to have it come crashing down when some fucker in the back gets a blue shell. Fuck. And it's always some prick with a fucked-up looking Mii and a name with smile faces in it that wins.

Super meat boy is so infuriating I haven't even beaten it.

Also most fighting games on anything past 'normal'
Namely marvel vs. capcom 3
The A.I. block everything and seem to somehow be able to read your mind and in every other fighting game command grabs can be performed with ease. In UMVC3 however the grab button is the same as the attack button, so you end up kicking and leaving yourself open rather than grabbing like you fucking wanted to.

I'm just a dreamer.

Oh, yea, that's what I was going to make this thread about. There were many missions throughout the game that were so damn difficult (back then) that I would just give up for a while and would try again later. There were plenty of others games that I would do this too.

Mount and Blade: Warband is extremely fucking infuriating since the AIs get such a huge advantage over you that its easy to get even when you control half the map. I have a laundry list of aggravating games, but I guess ill stick to current games since everyone knows how annoying games like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde are. Another one I find aggravating is Supreme Commander 2 because of how much slowdown the game has once you start reaching huge numbers in units. Each team can have like 1000 units so it adds up.

Change is inevitable, all you can do is make sure it happens in your favor.

Pretty much any game on the hardest difficulty will rob you of your sanity, and all for the sake of getting an imaginary trophy.

I think the game that infuriated me the most is Super Mario 64 actually. It doesn't do so anymore now (I like going back to it every now and again), but when I was a kid I occasionally got really frustrated with this game. The game isn't unfair at all though, I was just not that good at it at the time.
