I'm willing to bet that the number of votes earned has a just as strong a correlation to the amount of time put into a piece as to the skill level of the participants.
Maybe I'm wrong but it looks like Razac and Wesley spent many hours on theirs. I think Razac has a pic posted showing the progress of their pic as it was passed back and forth and you can see how they were constantly reworking everything to make sure the composition was just the way they wanted. Seeing the various stages of work impressed me even more than the finished work.

I agree with Ash. Although sometimes the hat leads to imbalanced teams, it's less likely to do so. When people can pick their partners, it can become blatantly one sides with the amateurs against the pros, whereas the hat may lead to an amateur WITH a pro.

It does have a lot to do with how much time you put into it, but what someone like me can do with 10 hours spent on a piece and what someone like Razac can do with 10 hours is completely different. Skill level really plays into it, and when the handchosen teams end up being amateurs vs. Pros, it's really just not very fair.
Granted, I didn't participate this time, but I can still see the results.
The hat isn't perfect, but I kind of like the random aspect of it.

i cant speak for raz, but since i keep seeing alot of numbers thrown around about time spent on this doubles.
for anyone curious i speant about 2-2 1/2 hours on this doubles, the first concept draft that was about 15 minutes, and then my landscape pass that was a couple hours.
i agree about choosing partners (since i did choose partners with the sole intent on stacking the odds in my favor) i have no problem admiting to it :P i wanted to win shame on me i know :P
but now that my official introduction to doubles are over im all for the random hat process....
i just have an issue of trying too hard :P
