Pop-Ups, etc. 2001-08-06 10:52:55

Everyone congratulate Wade, he is now a married man! We are all in major flux right now, with Wade getting married and both Ross and I moving to different places. Expect things to really pick up in about two weeks, when we will be around much more than we have been for the past month. I will probably need a few days to go through all the emails complaining about the pop-up ads, though.

We have disabled the auto-refreshing ads, so you will no longer get pop-ups while playing games. The ads will still refresh whenever you click a link, so you can still expect a lot of pop-ups. We don't control this aspect of the ad rotation, but are looking into it. I'm sure it is due to the fact that ads aren't paying well and we need to make up for it with quantity, but I'm sick of it and it has to stop.

Having a VISA pop-up ad every time you go to a new page is not going to sell any more Visa cards, and I'm sure it is paying on a CPA basis (meaning we don't even get paid unless YOU sign up). This idea that "running the ad 1000 times per visitor will generate more revenue" is bullshit and is the reason why the web has failed as a marketing platform.

Yes everyone, we are all fucked and the internet is a big shithole.

I will try to get the pop-ups cut back today, so you won't have to swim through them to use the site. In the meantime, try to support us some by supporting our stupid sponsors! Remember that giant Casino ad that was on the frontpage for a few weeks? They had a really complicated three-step process that had to be completed for us to get our comission. You had to not only sign up and validate your account, but you ALSO had to desposit $50 in your Casino account. So even if we sent them 1000s of registered users, it still hinged upon that $50. Guess what? It generated ZERO "complete" sign-ups . Nada, zip. We didn't get a dime for having that obnoxious ad plastered on the frontpage for all that time. Can you understand why I am in such a pissy mood?

This is so fucking lame... Studies are proving that banner ads actually do increase brand awareness, and we are still getting ass-raped every which way. Why can't a decent company step forward and sponsor Newgrounds? For the cost of one television commercial per month we could ditch all the other advertisers and keep the site running fine. Is anyone willing to step up and do that? Does anyone out there work for "cool" companies, like KMX or RED BULL energy drinks? SOBE Beverages was interested in a sponsorship a while back, but they were bought by COKE and suddenly that wasn't a good idea for them. Well guess what, COKE better learn where its market is - it is right here on the web!

Other studies are proving that TV use is declining in exchange for internet use. Don't companies see any value in that? The average user spends over 20 minutes on Newgrounds, and we get over 100,000 users every day. We are more popular than some TV shows, but we are still getting shit on.

Here is a homework assignmnent. If you work for a company that has ANY INTEREST AT ALL in the Gen-Y / Gen-X market, talk to your friends in the marketing department about Newgrounds. Tell them how for just a small piece of their advertising budget, they could be the sole sponsor of this site. Convince them, because they have their heads up their asses and they aren't listening! Newgrounds is a lifestyle for some people - you can't say that about FRIENDS and the other crap they are putting on TV! Ok, maybe Simpsons, but that's it!

I guess that's the end of this rant.

I 100% agree tom!! You should get rid of all them popups and shit! Get a decent sponser try and earn and save up some money to put a cheap short tv commercial on. Maby try and avritise on other really big sites and sign up to loads of search engines and stuff. Oh yeah by the way good luck to wade.

If Comedy Central keeps pushing censorship the way I think they are, you stand a good chance being sponsored by them. I coulden't think of anything more appropriate to sponsor you.

You know, you can also use basic porn ads. This site WAS meant for 18 and over. If it keeps NG going, I won't mind.

Yeah they pissed me off pretty bad too...until I downloaded a program from downloads.com it's called Pop-Up Stopper...you won't get anymore popup ads...the only downside is that you have to hold down the ctrl key if you want to open another browser window. It might only work with IE though...I'm not sure...

Yup Tom. Glad you had the balls to speak up and say it out loud. I was wondering what the hell was happening to newgrounds already. And yes, it sucks, but I still believe that there is a market for the internet. The big hype just has to lay down. There's enough to make money on, as soon as the target audience gets back to where it should be.

Congrats to Wade. I think its complete shit about newgrounds not getting anything out of all of these adds. I agree with all of the previous message posters on this thread, except the one that said we should pay money for newgrounds. I love newgrounds, and youre damn straight this place is a lie style for some of us, it is for me, I love this place. Sure, I know, your prolly thinking oh, he loves the site, but he cant pay a few dollors. Well with gas prices on the rise, and all of the bills I already have to pay... i think you understand. Anyways, I hope things work out. I have a link on my site to newgrounds, I get like 50 hits a day, which is like nothing compared to some sites, but I hope it helps a little. www.johnkilo.com

The pop-ups weren't as annoying as the torent of shitty movies that appeared over the weekend, and they were getting high votes?!?!?!?!?!?!? Some people are just plain stupid.

Unfortunately I don't know anyone that works for any company that would be intereested in as sponsorship deal (unless helicopter manufacturers decide to try, but I doubt it). Good idea though, it might be a good idea to make a list of companies that you would like to be sponsored by and send them letters proposing the deal. I dunno, just a thought.

Oh, and congrats to Wade :)

Congradulations wade!

I understood about the popups and they weren't bothering me all that much. The refreshing ones were pretty bad though and they did get in the way of games/movies. I agree with your view on your current ads. With a site like yours that gets this many users, you definetly need to lower the number of sponsers and get more targeted sponsers. collegehumor.com has playboy as a sponser. Now that would get you more clickthroughs than breast implants or iwin. I don't agree with the guy that suggested porn. You have way too many minors accessing the site. Maybe you could get a partnership with macromedia to send users there to buy flash. I don't know about having an optional pay service. Yuo woudl definetly have to provide some really good, current content and not charge very much for that to work. I wish you luck in finding a good way to make money.

By the way, approximately how much does it cost per month for newgrounds' bandwidth? Didn't you say that it was like $25k?

Hey Tom, I know! Some minors would gladly contribute money! But they don't have a credit card! But they absolutely have money! So, you could get a P.O. box or something and they could get their parents to give them a check or money order or send cash or something. If every user sent a dollar at least think how much cash you would have! That's alot of cash!
