Bare minimum, a pedo is going to look at pics of children. That's bare minimum. Hopefully he can do a decent job of resisting his urges. But that's not likely. If your brain is wired to take pleasure in something that's taboo, it's not a question of "if" a person will act on their urges. It's only a question of "when."

As for a pedo's human rights, those have to be weighed against the rights of children to be safe from potential sexual predators. Pose that question to a parent, and your going to get one response. They're not going to give a damn about the rights of a pedo. Registered sex offender moves into their neighborhood... They're going to harass his ass until he moves out. (And perhaps even worse than that). That's just realistic. I recently became an Uncle. I can't even image what I'd do if some pervert even touched the hair on the head of my nephew or niece. (In the old days, they'd take the perv up to the top of a neighborhood building, and toss him off the roof. Just how it was).

Oh yeah, it's definitely an easy way out. But few folks would lose sleep over it. Society is never going to be more open about the issue, because society is by & large made up of parents. Just how it is. And it's far from likely that it'll ever change.

I think you can see where I'm going with this. It's not the same. You can be into some kinky shit, and as long as it's with another consenting adult; that's fine. With a pedo, they have no such outlet for their desires. If they ever act on those desires, which is highly likely, some child is going to be traumatized for a vey long time. There is indeed a difference.

The rapist is a person, too. If I get to understand him, his life, his behavior, he may even be a sympathetic person.

That first part is debateable. A rapist, by definition, is never going to be a sympathetic person. It is someone who physically violates a weaker human being, in order to have power and dominance over them. You couldn't find sympathy in that, even if you have a microscope the size of Rhode Island.

It's not really about being smart. Many smart folks are in jail because they acted on their urges & desires. I'm sure you've seen that seies, "To Catch a Predator." Even after multiple episodes were aired, there were still plenty of pedos who came to the houses. Some of them even discussed the show with their potential victims. Yet, despite knowing the likelihood, of getting caught in the sting; they still showed up anyway! Some of them were clearly intelligent, but their urges to rape a child were clearly far too strong.

As for the Joker, he's many things (namely fictional) but he never raped a child. Imagine a scene in a movie like that?? No one would consider him to be cool, after that.
