This isn't a relationship help thread. It's about wether my adulthood could cause problems due to the law.

I am 18 years old, and recently started dating a 16 year old girl, and so far things have been going great. Her mother is against her having a boyfriend though, and she doesn't know about me. I was wondering would there be any way I could get in trouble (with the law) for dating somebody who isn't an adult like I am now? (Here in Quebec, Canada, the adult age is 18)

People tell me it could be classified under 'pedophile' just because I'm an adult. Is this true?

If it's 18, then yes, technically it is illegal.

However, you can both deny it and most likely, nothing will come out of it.

You will only have legal problems if you get caught having sex with her.

The age of consent is 14 in some countries and 16 in others, which makes you dating her legal, the only thing you can't do is publish nude photos of her.

There is nothing wrong with dating someone under the legal age if you are just over it. Sure sex may be illegal for 2 years but plenty of 16 year olds have sex anyway so who cares.

The age of consent is 16 in Canada, you can date a 16 year old, this doesn't really have to go on any further.

Just don't publish nude photos of her.

Thanks for those of you who posted seriously, it's a good thing she just turned 16 last week!

I know where I live there can be a four year age difference as long as the girl is over the age of 16 and the older person isn't in a position of authority over the younger person like a teacher or something. You'll have to check local laws for yourself though. It could be different.

Not 100% sure, but I believe where I live, a 12 year difference is the maximum allowed if one is underaged. So as a 25 year old, you may still have a relationship with a 13 year old. Although quite a big difference in maturity, that law doesn´t seem unreasonable to me... And no-one´s gonna go for 7 year olds when he´s 19. Or at least I have never heard of such a case :p

The general family term of a pedophile is an old man having sex with young children, yet there are marriages that seem fit and normal with a 15 year age difference. I suggest trying to work it out with her parents, although some of the 16 year old parents are bullshit assholes and are against anything that they don't seem fit, like dating and such. So if you cant work it out with her parents, you can wait til she is 18 and go from there, because her parents could file a lawsuit against you if you date her without their approval, and that's still bullshit, so be careful.

dont see anything wrong with just dating her, but untill she is 18 you shouldnt go further then that

I was saying "having a relationship". A serious relationship. I never mentioned anything about fucking ;)

Anyway, I just looked it up and found a very recent article about a 26 and a 14 year old. The 26 year old went unpunished since the relationship was serious, but it was decided that from then on people have to be 16 or older before they can have sex with eachother.

So I guess a 12 years difference is indeed no problem here, as long as you don´t have sex with eachother...

Check the Age of Consent for Ontario (google ftw), but some jurisdictions have laws that allow sex between people that are close in age, so even if its 18, you still may be fine. As for just dating, you dont have anything to legally worry about.
