I ended making some tool to help make the mods lifes easier and it sometimes requires maintenance / fixes which is kinda hard to do without being a mod. Have to admit I haven't really done any actual modding in a long time though.

Man, rip my wallet after today's Bandcamp Friday. I keep telling myself that this is the last album I buy, and then I get an email from yet another label that I'm following that they released a vinyl or cassette of an album I like.
There was also an artist I know that released his album on a Gameboy Advance cartridge, but it doesn't ship outside of the US, unfortunately.

that's one of the reasons, but im thinking of the obsession with metrics (plays and ratings) and missing the point of making music/art in general. that's what i think at least.

Mhmm, and that correlates to making less music, which leads to less fans, being less likely to interact with other producers -- because god forbid they have higher ratings than you, so you don't even want to review.
I wish there were an incentive to review tracks, a way to gift artists you like grounds gold, something like that. I've seen it done on other platforms like Lum, where artists get credits in return for things like streaming each other's tracks a certain amount of time, or just buying credits, which can be gifted then to artists you like on their tracks in the form of stickers and pins. If an artist receives 20,000 of those points, they can cash out through stripe.
I haven't thought out exactly how this would work on newgrounds -- say in return for reviews, a user can earn a small amount of grounds gold, and then choose to donate that to whoever he likes, get or gift supporter status, etc, but I'm thinking on making a post in the suggestions to Tom thread on it. The revenue system on NG has long been broken, and I think an artist support feature like this could potentially do wonders for not only churning up the pace of community interaction but giving artists real hope of actually making something with their art -- and give the front page a whole new level of epic. Not to mention the credits that don't get cashed out naturally could be used for site upkeep.

naturally, you'd review more and post more, but then you could just abuse it and just give short reviews and post unpolished/unfinished tracks for some free credits.

Very true. I think if the reward were small enough, and the pay out threshold high enough, it would cut some of that out. Users would naturally peter out over time if they were doing it just for the creds, and the spammy reviews would be simple enough to remove. Perhaps it would work better if the author were to decide to award points for helpful feedback, or other users could decide to toss points here and there.
On Lum, the rewards aren't just per comment or stream. There's a daily reward for streaming, up to 30 minutes, something like 5 credits, so perhaps a daily award for reviews, like there used to be for the deposit system, and the same amount for tracks posted, and then just allow users to give each other extra points for site contributions they liked, not allow users on the same ip to gift each other points, and punish those who try to subvert the system, voila. Would you use it?
