Lordy, lordy, lordy! Dude that sucks...just out of curiosity though, which games are you noticing a drop in performance? Have you had any issues while booting up your DAW or otherwise?

Well the main perpetrator was Battlefield 4.
Went from playable on Ultra to 15 fps on Low.

Though, I probably wouldn't have formatted just for that, because I know the game is a bucket of bugs ready to fail whenever you're not looking.

But I also saw slightly diminished performance in games like Crysis 3, Just Cause 2 and CS: GO. Not by a lot. About a 10% Drop in FPS. But it outlined that something was wrong.

DAW and other software worked fine, but recently I also started getting an occasional BSOD every couple of weeks.

I'm done formatting and while I feel naked and exposed until I reinstall my recording toys, I'm happy to report that performance is back to normal (and then some).

Curiously, CPU temps in Idle also seem to have lowered by 5-7*C.

All of which leads me to believe that I might have had some Bitcoin Mining Malware sucking away my resources. Odd that Malware Bytes didn't catch it though.

I should totally get an SSD.

I have an SSHD, which is a regular 2TB HDD with an 8GB SSD used as cache. A pretty smart system, though it isn't on par with a full blown SSD.

And thanks for the tip, I've been meaning to look into backup software. In this particular case I was looking to wipe everything, because I had no idea what was causing the problem (maybe an installed program) but something like Acronis sounds extremely handy for future occurrences. Gun' check it out!
