Three Short Poems 2007-04-07 23:03:04

So for English class, I had to write three poems for a contest we're holding. They had to do with anything at all (possibly what your opinion is on life). I just wanted to see how you'd like them. Here' the first one I've read:

Also, no real rhyme scheme is necessary in poems, so don't expect a lot

That is the Weekend
Whenever there’s no school
Whenever I can do whatever I want (almost)
Whenever it’s 2 ½ days off
That is the weekend

It’s when I can sit around on the computer
It’s when I can watch TV all day
It’s when Mom will have something else for me to do
That is the weekend

I can dress the way I want
I can stay indoors all day
I can have cereal for dinner
That is the weekend

But there’s still taking down laundry
But there’s still making my bed
But there’s still brushing my hair to not look like a mess
That is the weekend

A reason to make an excuse to do nothing
A reason to have things my way
A reason to try weird things
That is the weekend

Too bad it’s that short though
Too bad it’s not enough fun time
Too bad the only extensions are holidays
That is the weekend

If it has life
If it has liberty
If it has pursuit of happiness
That is the weekend

And to sum it up

My place
My time
My space
My freedom
My weekend
That is the weekend

Poem #2. This one actually has a rhyme scheme to it.

It’s NOT the end of the World, People
It’s amazing how we’re still alive today
Instead of being dead right where we lay
Numerous prophecies of the end of the world
How our existence hasn’t been twirled.

Superstitions of the 13th of Friday
Like that movie with Jason if you may
Come on people, it’s just a movie
It doesn’t mean you can do what you want and be a juvie.

Then there’s the 6th of June on 06
When the devil would come and take his picks
Just because it’s the number of the devil
Doesn’t mean we should hide in a corner and revel.

Scientists predict Apophis 30 years later
Well I have to become one with a debater
And say that they were wrong to state this too soon
If they were wrong, they’d feel like a loon.

Many people fear about dying
Because a lot of us are failing at trying
To scare us with all this whack stuff
While I stand here thinking ‘That’s enough!’.

‘If you don’t give me a source, it didn’t happen
And all you’ll get is a real good slappin’
And if it turns out that I’m wrong,
Then hell has frozen over all along!’

If you could all just get some common sense,
Then we wouldn’t all have to be so tense
About what seems like the end of us
So can we just stop making a fuss?

I mean, if we were really all going to die
And not end up being faced with a really big lie
Then there’d have to be some absolute sign
To show that hell is where we will dine.

I don’t mean anything like UFOs
I don’t mean anything like intergalactic foes
I mean something like a widespread disease
So let’s all get real, please.

It’s global warming that may end us all
Because it will cause this place to flood, as I recall
And if we can all just get a grip
Then maybe this time we won’t slip.

What I’m trying to tell you here
Is that the end may be near
But not likely caused by things from outer space
But the trouble that’s gathering in this place

A poem for all who are overreacting.

Poem #3. Again, no rhyme scheme, but I like this one the best of all, being the longest and true to what I think.

Stuck in a Routine
Every day
It’s just one day after the other
No easy way out
No easy way to break the mold

Not even extreme tests to rattle brains
Not even assemblies
Not even the random lunch menu
They make slight change
But not large enough for a whole new day

I get on the bus at about 7
Even almost missing it
Doesn’t change the day
Looking out the window
With nothing else to do but stare
Trying to guess if this day will be different

First there’s Spanish
With two crazy loons in the back
Hm, nothing new there
Almost everyone’s rather nutso
Foreign language adds variety
But it happens every day. So no

Computer design course
Just as interesting as the last
Even the projects have interesting change-ups
They almost qualify in changing the day
But only almost
Math is up next
And formulas galore
Square roots, cubed roots, and so on
Having to memorize them all
Kind of makes you forget about the day
And how it’s all rather the same

4th period gives me fine arts
It’s band class to be specific
Sight-reading, reviewing, etcetera
Usually over the same songs
There’s no common way
To change the day

If I don’t have a private lesson
Then it’s lunch whole next period
Many voices all around
With the loudest being nearest to me
I’ve got my usual lunch pack
Eat, drink, study. That’s it.

Next period is technical
American literature is where it’s at
An extreme amount of books and short stories
That are required for reading assignments
…Nothing new here either

Social Studies picks it up
As there’s a lot of visual learning
Oh, and handouts, too
More loons in the class, just like in Spanish
How much sugar was that?

If it’s not Thursday, then there’s gym
It’s always focused on one idea at a time
But it hardly changes the way we play
Only shows us how multi-talented we are
Or it shows how lazy we are

At the end, there’s science
If it’s Thursday, then it replaces gym, too
Where there are weird lab assignments
But if not, then it’s note-taking and remembering
Possibly studying for tests. Pretty much it

After school, it’s also the usual
Time on the computer, time for HW
Time for dinner, time to wash up
Time for more HW, and if possible, more computer
At bed, I just lie there, thinking
Will there be something interesting tomorrow?
Then I just close my eyes.

Repeat.
