Is this my third mic thread? :(
Well, I had my eyes on the SM-58... had. But $100 is too much. How about a microphone slightly cheaper for $50-$75... or is the SM-58 industry standard that I should get?

Yeah, sure... for the same shit quality that I get in my Logitech desk mic.
Or perhaps I should go for "the last mic I'll ever need" kind of approach? Will this mic pick up "puh's" and other big breaths of air, as well as a lot of background sounds (perhaps an air conditioner)?
G9, you're going to find in most mic's you'll hear the "Puh's".
You'll need a mic like this to counter that problem.
They're called condenser microphones. It eliminates any air pressure problems you create with your voice so that it exclusively picks up the pure frequencies.
Oh... perfect for me, in that case. But they look even more expensive...
Avoiding the "PUH"s is pretty simple with any microphone. Instead of speaking directly into the mic, just speak into it sideways so that your breath goes perpendicular past the input of the mic.

I would think that'd be less clear than speaking directly.

Actually, the only difference is maybe the volume is slightly lower. Which means all you have to do is speak louder. And you can speak pretty much as loud as you want without a PUH. Give it a try.
Yes, though you don't get the "Puh's", you also lose the natural low frequncies from your voice that make it sound fuller, so you're right G9. A condenser microphone is still the more professional alternative to "Puh's".
i would still get the sm 58 but buy it used on ebay or something.

not too many people sell them used because they work so well.
You could go with a Shure PG-58. You can find them at best buy or just about any place on the internet. They're about $30. Pretty reliable microphone. To get rid of the 'puh's you speak of, you could pick up a windscreen for $20 or so and that'll take care of the problem.
Sigh... I'll just go with the SM-58 as planned.
Woah... wait a sec. Forgot about the "puh"'s. :P Will the SM-58 pick those up?

Well I bought a Super Cardiod Mic from Radioshack a little while ago and it seems to work great. The noise levels are slim to none and since it's super cardiod it doesn't pick up feedback from things around it much. It was about 40 bucks so it's actually cheaper than what you are looking for.
You can check it out here:
Oh yeah, I'm pretty sure the mic i suggested does not pick up deep breaths that is unless your lips are practically touching, i don't know i may be exagerating but it's a good mic.
I don't know why, but it looks cheap... can anyone back kmg up? Thanks for the suggestion, man.
Condenser mics don't eliminate the "puhs" you hear. For that, your best bet is to build a pop filter.
Whoops, am I giving wrong information David? My friend Jeremy rented one of them and he said thats exactly what it did.
G9 i am gonna offer you the cheapest yet most effecive way to get rid of those puhh and buhh sounds of air that hit your mic, get a pop filter man u can make a home made one stretch pantyhoes over a coat hanger trust me i use it on my crappy dynamic mic and it works awsome for me .
this pic might help explain whta im talking about
Very industrious idea, I may just try that. Thanks!
Alright, so SM-58 and Pop Filter... how expensive is a pop filter, and where can I get one? Thanks guys!

Build one, as Greekska said. Very easy to do, I have a hand-made one and it works just like the real thing. SM also has a windscreen, which helps eliminate puahs and breathy sounds.
Condenser mics would actually pick up more "puahs" and such, since they are more sensitive to sound. You would also need phantom power when using them, so I would recommend going with a dynamic mic. Get the SM 58 over the 57 because the 58 has a windscreen. They're the same mic, but the 57 is better for micing a snare, not vocals.
Why dont you spend that extra 25-50 dollars and get a good one?
Yeah... I'm not even sure how to build one in the first place.

What are you talking about building one, I thought you were going to BUY one?

hes talking about a pop sheild
Alright, so I need to know how to buy or build a pop shield. In addition, I'd like to know how to build or buy a stand for the mic, and finally... what external audio card should I get? It should be under $50...
Alright... I need help. Check out this thread, and help me find an external audio card, stand, and pop filter.
