Where to begin...

Well, this song is for Bosa's "Dreams of Splendor" contest. I set out to write something meaningful, something that had substance and was truly a reflection of who I am. I will give what I intended to convey through the music, though by no means is it limited to the following:

Life, the beginning. Beautiful, full of joy and light, but still fraught with moments of peril and suffering. It is a journey that is incomplete, a path that you cannot reach the end of without taking a leap into the unknown.

Death, noted especially by the horns. It is somber, yet contains the hope of something greater than itself and all that came before it.

Rebirth, the culmination of life and death. All is seen unveiled, life in its truest and fullest sense. What once was imperfect is now perfect, what once was broken is now whole.

This song is about life, death, and rebirth. It is about putting away one's former way of life and embracing something even more beautiful. This song is about love, sacrifice, and baptism.

This all being said, please take it as you will. That's the beautiful thing about music - what you get out of this piece may be entirely different than I intended, yet still relevant and good.

I had originally intended on adding lyrics to this piece, but in the end decided not to include them. I will, however, include the relevant lyrics here:

Dreams fade, hope remains
Falling into endless night a light is
Calling me beyond the grave

I am a formless wasteland
Let there be
I am a formless wasteland
Breathe life into me
Set fire to my soul

When violent storms surround me
The earth cries out in pain
The heavens fold around me
Will I ever be the same

Don't let me be the same

Sing, my soul!
Sing, my soul!

Those soft horns give a nice atmosphere. Nice bass at 3:12, sounds a little unexpected. I wonder how the lyrics would have fit in.

bassfiddlejones responds:

I liked the horns too, haha. Maybe someday I'll decide to add the vocals to this. We shall see!

Very nice composition, the part where the horns came in is my favorite, I love somber melodies.
WIsh I could have heard how it would have sounded with vocals even though it already sounds amazing without.
Nice work!

bassfiddlejones responds:

I'm particularly fond of the horn part myself! Maybe I'll eventually add the vocals.

Wow. It's good to see something Artistic in nature, not solely for creativity, but expression of personal thought and even in a sense, philosophy if you will. Days like this, where I stumble upon something besides a dubstep or dance track entertain me, as it's great to see such unique material. I myself honestly fall in the former of the two types of music for the most part, but if I felt I just had the patience, the will, and time, I'd love to make something as remotely beautiful as what you've made. At first you think to yourself, "Wow, this is going to be long." But actually, by the end of it you feel as though it wasn't long enough. I haven't gotten much out of it this time, but I'll have to come back to this, or put it on my ipod, and just daydream to see what it makes me think of. I think of the most amazing things listening to such unique music.

bassfiddlejones responds:

I'd love to hear your thoughts while listening to this one! I'm quite happy that you enjoyed this, thank you for the kind words.

I listened to it. It's beautiful, as if there aren't enough words to produce the intended result. It almost brings to me to peace with the meaning of living, and of birth, and the approaching of death. Beyond those doors, lies a promised land, and past it's doors lies Zion.

"Set fire to my soul
When violent storms surround me
The earth cries out in pain
The heavens fold around me
Will I ever be the same
Don't let me be the same
Sing, my soul!
Sing, my soul!"

And while we are aware of the quakes that seize the helpless, and the children, tear down our monuments and bring fire upon us, we look at the earth, looking for a new place, to build home. We bring fire, and warmth to help us through tragedy, and the oaths we put upon ourselves.

And we march towards the end in search for rebirth.

"Set fire to my soul", "Sing, my soul! Sing, my soul!"

Carry that close to your heart, and within sight, as well as the meaning of what you hope to find, should the gates of Heaven wait for you. I hope you find them, and that they find you as well.
