Game?!
I can see this style working heaps good in a game with some glow effects and stuff like that. With this style because the foreground is completely black and simple you should try and do a bit more with the background.

I can't animate, I don't have the tools to animate. :/
I agree about the background. Looking at it now, this piece is actually a little boring. It's far too simple and it's quite flat. Even working in all black, I could have added smaller hills with smaller trees around the main hill, their size giving the effect that they're farther away. I just neglected to add more to it, and I regret that.

I like the style. Maybe if you want to not use color for this, switch it up a bit. Use different shades of black and grey and see what more detail you can give it

I was trying to work in a specific style; cream background with light brown swirls, lines, and circles decorating it and a solid black image atop that. I made my NG icon, forum signature, and Deviantart icon with that style, so I deigned to make a whole piece like that. Adding more shades and colors would be breaking that!
But I guess it does seem a tad too simple, and I get what you're saying. Thanks for commenting!
Smells Like Darkness
Kinda like an Edgar Allen Poe poem. I hope to see these creepy little guys again in more art.
The swirly black ghosts, I've used before. My scanner's broken, so I can't show you, but in my moleskine I've made drawings featuring them. I was trying to come up with a new way to draw ghosts that looks less cliche, and I like this result. I can't really show emotion on them, though.
