I don't think it can be called an "metroidvania", it's not exactly the type of the game.
But I like the concept of the game, it's creative. You have a item that opens the entire level, but it have a ammo gauge and have to be recollected. Nice catch.

Glad you enjoyed it, the idea of the helm running out of power came from Tom Hall, creator of Commander Keen, who organised the jam this was made for. :)
It's good but I wish the controls for the freeze and ice spear spell were reversed, it feels counter-intuitive that the former is an instant tap while the latter require charging, especially as its your primary weapon
Glad you enjoyed it. The ice spear originally was a tap move and the freeze needed holding but this made the freeze really awkward to use which made it less useful as a defensive/panic button sort of move. The typical combo of running up to an enemy, freezing them and then using the ice spear was made a lot more fiddly.
I also liked the idea of the helm sort of focusing your powers, so without the helm you can only perform a wild blast of magic but then wearing the helm lets you focus into a more powerful attack.
Wacky controls, but cool concept
It uses the standard Pico-8 controls. Also works nicely on gamepads. :)
It slipped and slid at the slightest provocation. You need to work on being able to play the game without the screen scrolling off the game.
