Reviews for "Munguía Nokia Games"

Ah, the Nokia Phone. It's fantastic how entertaining those simple games were back in the day. The amount of stuff they managed to put on a low res screen with only two colors was super cool. They really had to work hard to deal with the phone's many limitations, and this short Flash experience emulates those limitations quite accurately.

This game's presentation is purposefully simplistic, and it does get really annoying after a while, but that's all in keeping with the theme, so I can't really complain. There are quite a few mini games in this Flash game, so let's check them out one by one.

The first game, "Ice Cube", is a fun little platforming and dodging game. The ending was quite adorable too. If I were to criticize something, it'd be that the character's hitbox is a bit big.

"The Doors" is not much of a game, more like a guessing... game? Either way, it's not fun to play, but the things that happen after each choice are funny. I particularly love the ending, with the hilarious puns and all that. This one occasionally makes the entire thing freeze up after you lose, for some reason, forcing me to refresh.

"Guac-a-mole" sounds like it could be a fun whack-a-mole game, but since there's no refresh time after every hit, and no penalty for missing, it's way too easy to win by simply spamming every key. Also, I have to wonder, is there any reason why the choice of keys for this one is so awkward?

"Jurassic Park" is a simpler version of that "no Internet connection" minigame that comes up on Chrome after your mom destroys the modem with an axe because you won't pay attention to her. It's fun for what it is, and the ending, once again, was quite adorable.

"Guitar Hero" is a spoof of Heroes of Might and Magic. Just kidding, of course. I love how it literally features a guitar that is a hero. It is a pretty basic rhythm game, with the downside that there is no penalty for missing, so you can keep spamming the keys and win, just like in "Guac-a-mole." I like that every level has you helping someone like a superhero would, that's super cute.

"Iron Man" is a simple shooter game where you play as a clothes iron. You need to shoot magic missiles at various super hero outfits until they get folded up, and if you take too long, they start advancing and make you lose hit points. On top of that, there are bombs that occasionally show up that you need to avoid. Pretty straight forward game, and kinda fun. Once again, this one is full of cute puns. You can't beat it by spamming the keys, which is a point in its favor.

"Reincarnation" is one of the most interesting games in the bunch. You play as a bullfighter who got killed by an animal rights activist that pretended to be in love with you. After being barred from the gates of heaven and sent to hell, you reincarnate as cattle, and experience the suffering of cattle in human society. Gameplay-wise, there are some simple platforming elements, but not as good as Ice Cube. The "cow" mode froze up for me, and I had to hit Esc.

"Impact Space" is a bad Flappy Bird spoof that I can't get past the first couple of pipes in. It also doesn't help that it won't let me reset with Esc, forcing me to refresh the page.

All in all, this was quite an interesting little experience. The funny puns, the cute references, and that very sad message at the end put a smile on my face. Just like the Nokia brick phone before it, Flash is also about to be retired for good. Oh well, it was a good couple of decades, right?

As for the games, however, it feels to me like they go for quantity over quality, and that's just sad. Those are the simplest games in existance, and some oversights on the developer's part left some of them outright broken, like Guac-a-mole and Guitar Hero. My favorite one is Ice Cube, which I quite enjoyed. It has some fair challenge and a cute little cartoony story.

Overall, though, in spite of the games being not so good, I can't lie, this was a fun little experience. If you have a few minutes to spare, you could do worse than playing a bit of this.
