Reviews for "Voltage"

you are thrust into this with the expectation to automatically know not to shoot the turrets?

this game is literally better (in my opinion) than certain similar games i've received as my free playstation plus game of the month (forma.8 comes to mind) i can't believe someone could create something like this in only 2 days. if you keep this up i could totally see a future title of yours making it to say a playstation or xbox market provided you assmelbled a team (try to find a guy to make better music, because while the music for this game isn't bad even a decent game can be made good by a stellar sound track). Just listen to feedback and try to learn from your mistakes, you'll get there

I really liked it, even if it was short. The atmosphere is definitely the highlight of the game for me.
But I have to agree that it has the potential to be far better than it already is.

I didn't argue with controls as others, I noticed you can even outrun the unbeatable sentry by circling its field of vision. Don't know if that was intended but I thought it was nice.

The boss battle is very easy, yes, but it keeps the atmosphere.

If you put more days into it, I'd definitely try it again.

This game has a simple but surprisingly effective core mechanic, let down by some significant flaws and short length.

In this game, you control a... blue electrical plug? I dunno, that's what it looks like to me. You have to navigate short rooms in search of an exit to the next level, and avoid being spotted by enemies which will zap you the instant you enter their visibility cone. Some foes can be destroyed if you zap them before they zap you, and others will just get stunned for a short while. The instant death penalty for being spotted, together with the game's slow pace and the enemies' random-ish movement, slowly taught me to proceed carefully and always be on my toes when exploring a new level, which made for a fun experience... for the most part.

The atmosphere conveyed by the minimalistic graphics and droning electronic music, associated with the game's simple mechanics, make for a sweet retro feel, as if you're trapped in a Tron challenge or something of the like, and I love it.

I must say, however, that the game's controls and certain design choices are just outright bad. The movement is grid-based, which is not bad per se, but it makes navigation and enemy dodging cumbersome at times. Also, sometimes I'm right beside a switch I need to zap but need to walk a step away from it (exposing myself to danger) so I can face the right direction to shoot. This could easily have been solved by making the player face the direction they're pressing. Furthermore, you can't see enemies' visibility cones when they're off screen, which may result in many cheap deaths, as they might zap you before you are able react. Lastly, zapping makes you a sitting duck for a few seconds, which leads to cheap deaths and makes switch pressing slower than it has any right to be.

The game's level design is not awful, but I feel like there are tons of missed opportunities here. The switches you press to progress in a level, for instance, are never more than glorified detours on the way to the end, and they could have been so much more if, say, some puzzles were introduced in some levels which required you to close and open specific gates to achieve some desired effect and open the way. That's only scraping the surface of what could have been done here, really, there are so many possibilities that went unexplored. The boss battle for instance, is the game's weakest point, which is a shame.

All in all, this is a game with an interesting core mechanic and a nice atmosphere, let down by rather obnoxious control and visibility mechanics. Could have been great with better controls and more thoughtful level design. Maybe some optional collectibles too, but I digress.

I'm assuming this was made in RPG Maker MV? Something about the control scheme and grid-based movement gives me that impression. Not that there's a problem with that, I like RPG Maker, it's just that it's unusual to see it on Newgrounds.

A psudo-stealth game with random patrols, weird movement, and a disappointingly easy boss fight.
