Reviews for "Whitewash"

well i thought this was a pretty damn good game. good enough that i felt the need to actually log in to review and rate it. I don't know why people are complaining about the controls, while playing i was using a mousepad on my laptop and the only problem i faced was from that. i do think you could have told the user that right click was to pick up the gun sooner cause i almost thought it was a joke game. as for dropping your gun before going to the next level it was annoying at first but i could understand why and it kind of grew on me. well all in all i liked it except for the lack of instruction. looking forward to a sequel.

GraveDangerGames responds:

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed it :)
Yeah, looks like I'm gonna have to reconsider my no-tutorial policy :P
Added a note in the Author's comments.

It takes several minutes to insult you before telling you how to even pick up a weapon.

GraveDangerGames responds:

It's the best tutorial I've ever written.

There are a few things I think would make this soooo much more fun. Reload periods for both the player and the AI. The weapons dropping/pick up is wonky.... sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Why does the character lose his weapon after he kills all the enemies on the floor? A few improvements would go a long way in making this average game a really great game. The look and feel are great.

GraveDangerGames responds:

Hi!
About the reload it would be fair, but I didn't think we needed that aditional difficulty... and the weapon drop is for two reasons:
1 - I liked the idea of starting every level empty handed. It's so much more baddass :)
2 - There's nothing left to do in the level! You enjoy shooting at walls? What have they ever done to you?
Thanks for your comments :)

it was alright, but once i realized that they wont shoot if your far enough i just backed up while shooting at them.
Either put a shot limit on the guns or make the enemies shoot from farther away, also life bar i could never tell how much life i have

GraveDangerGames responds:

Hi! Yes enemies do need some more behaviours, patrol paths and stuff... next WW game I promise :)
I thought it would be worst to have enemies shoot at you while off-screen. They could react once they eat the first bullet though... I'll try to implement that over the next couple days!
Given the very few game mechanics, how would having a life bar change the way you play? Did you notice how the character comments on his health state?
Thanks for you comments!

PS. Just submitted an update based on your feedback! Bullets are destroyed as soon as they get out of view and hitting a target doubles its awareness distance so it'll come for you immediately.

It's quite apparent that this game drew a lot of inspiration from Hotline Miami, it did however miss what made that game so enjoyable: Highly responsible controls, a surprisingly deep (alebit cheesy) story and, in particular, an incredibly fast and score attack-y gameplay where every second, every slightest move was important and made the difference between life and death.
In this game on the other hand... well, firstly your character is quite slow, secondly there is nothing to keep you on your toes seeing how the enemies are rather passive up until they spot you, and thirdly, and most importantly - you die in many, many shots (and so do the enemies) - it feels not like a gunfight but rather like throwing rubbers at one another hoping to hit the other person's nose.
On a side note - according to the game's description we're playing as a hitman of sorts, something's telling me a professional killer wouldn't stroll around shouting insults at his targets

GraveDangerGames responds:

Hi! Yes HM is a game I love and was indeed the main inspiration for this little game. I just want to point out that I didn't miss what made HM great, I just didn't see the point of photocopying it! I like to say that I "Vlambeer-ed" it :)
Confused about your last point. Your character only comments about its health. The targets are the ones shouting at you.
Thanks for playing and leaving a comment :)
