Reviews for "Playing With Letters"

The link in the description is not showing. But the game is a nice puzzle. I like it.

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

I doubt you managed to play the game that much already, as it was uploaded less than 3 minutes ago XD
But you got the first medal, so good in that aspect.
The link wasn't showing, because I uploaded the newspost and the game at the same time, and updated them both once I got the links. But it is showing now.

Good luck with the rest of the game, and thanks for reviewing.

Good game. I always enjoy a text-based adventure even though they are largely out of fashion. For that, you get extra points.

The puzzles were ok, with maybe a little too much reliance on the same kind of thinking. The math problem was, as you say, pointless.

I would be very interested to play another of your games, and urge you to put in a little more time filling out the story and adding variety to the puzzles. If you do, I could see you making some money selling them for mobile devices.

Keep at it!

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

I always wondered why they've grown out of fashion. Thanks for the extra points XD

Yeah. I didn't have time to broaden the puzzles, as I had a kind of deadline. I really would've liked to make a longer game, with even more and different puzzles. The math problem was there just for fun, as is kind of hinted at too. Most everything else in the game has a meaning, so I wanted to include something that was a bit ridiculous. So in a way, I guess that IS the meaning.

Had I had more time, I ensure you I would've at least tried to do that! But it is still valid criticism, and I thank you for that. I am not really interested in making mobile games at the moment though. In the end, I'm just a musician :)

Thanks for your review!

Sound is un-mutable and cant be reduced, text goes too slow, and cant be skipped. But the main flaw is that the only ending that makes me want to play more or wait for a sequel its the secret one.

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

Thank you for the review!

I do have explanations for what you pointed out though, and one of the claims is simply false.

The ability to mute the sound is indeed not programmed into the game, for various reasons. The first being that it's a bit of a pain to add a mute function in the software I use at times. But more importantly, it's because the sound is 50% of this game. I know it's common that one should insert a muting possibility, but in this game, it'd be the equivalent of removing the textures of a fantasy game, while playing it in black an white, aka it removes much if not most of the experience. And if one really wants to, it's very easy to just mute the browser. Of course, this is a small downside for medal hunters of the kind that don't really care for the game itself.

The text is intentionally slow, but you must've overlooked a lot, because not only are there 2 ways to skip/speed up the text, but it is mentioned in 2 places. Both in the description, and in the game itself. You can't fault me for you not reading the intructions.

I totally get your point about the ending. Let's just say that the intentions behind it changed when I saw the positive reaction to it from the people who played the game. I will learn from this in the future.

Either way, thank you for playing and for reviewing, and still giving a relatively high score! :D

I really enjoyed the concept, and while I agree that most of the puzzles are a tad too easy, I didn't really mind. I would have really liked there to be a sort of punishment for getting it wrong, like the killer has my family held hostage or something. Being able to lose would make it feel much more dramatic. And also my favorite part was the ending when he told a bit of his story. I think having a reward after each puzzle, like another piece of his story, would help make it more engrossing. The longer and more involved the story is the better I think

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

I'm glad you liked the game :)
I decided early on not to punish you for writing a wrong answer, as it's partly a trial and error based game. Also, it would make very little sense for such a punishment to exist within the concept of the game, as the answers are just what opens some mechanical locks.

I'm glad you liked the story! And having a reward like that after each puzzle is indeed not a bad idea! :D
The direction I took was more to mix his personality and story into every puzzle and page.
Thanks a lot for playing, and for leaving a review!

Well a nice game here and a fantastic text puzzle game you bring on some nice puzzle elements, I do love the murder mystery aspect on this game and that gave it some added depth a fun submission indeed it has a good vibe, anyways great stuff
