Reviews for "StarBright"

Really good for a first game. Was pretty wonky throughout...
8==D ~~o Atop every vine, you have to jump away so as to not get stuck in limbo.
8==D ~~o If you're anywhere near a door, hitting up will suck you back to the cave. (Maybe make the player object have to stop in front of it)
8==D ~~o Definitely need more relevant respawn points. I gave up on level 5. One nic from a razor and it's back to square one! Too tedious for me.

SirNightOwl responds:

Hey thanks for the review! The vine thing was an issue I was aware of and have spent a long time trying to fix, will get there eventually! Your other points are certainly valid as well! :)

Nice game here with some really nice level design I do think some more harder elements in this would be a nice add on, Some sort of end game content like a boss of sorts would be a plus, I enjoyed this game for what it is so nice entry nice platformer style of a game

~X~

Well, I really can't say this is too bad or good. It is quite easy to understand. The problem is that it comes off as too cutesy. There should probably be more detail in it. I guess I was just looking for some enemies in this. It seemed a bit too pleasant. Well, I haven't seen how gruesome it is when I'm killed by spikes.

You don't get a medal for going past the opening part. I guess there's nothing too bad about it. It doesn't really have bad game mechanics or anything. It is just quite mediocre. There are more unique games to look at.

SirNightOwl responds:

I think I acheived the look I was going for, might not be everyone's taste :) This was my first game and in a way a 'prototype' for how to do quest type objectives in a platformer, which isn't too common imo, but my next game will be much more elaborate. Thanks for the review! :D

I really dig the folksy art style you've got going on.
It's really easy to digest and fun to traverse along the levels. The music accompanying the levels is also very smart in choice. It kept with the theme of the levels and I was relaxed the whole time. The level design and music blended well with the simple platforming to make for a satisfying experience.

I didn't like the constant jump noise your character made every time they took to the air. It was jarring to have to hear it over and over. Speaking of the character, I don't like the choice of a Meatboy clone being the main character. I would have liked to see maybe an elf, or a gnome or some such creature that flowed well with the rest of the game's core ideas.

Overall, I think this is a simple platformer that is fun and satisfying in it's own right and I'd like to see more in the future.

SirNightOwl responds:

Thanks for the review! This is the kind of detail I like to read! Next time I'll add a 'mute sound effects button' in addition to the music one. Whilst I know there is similarities between meatboy and my character it is pure coincidence, the colour for example is the sky colour inverted and the character design actually comes from another game entirely myself and Turkey are working on. However I really like your ideas of an elk or gnome for a character!

Glad you enjoyed it! :)

Gameplay is good but the game lacks lots of presentational elements and details. E.g., there should be instructions in-game as well, and the story is vague at best. Why is there a wizard?

SirNightOwl responds:

Yeah I agree, as stated it is my first game and this is definitely something I will do in the future! The wizard was going to provide and be part of a narrative, but time ran out so I only got to use him for the intro :(
