Reviews for "Dark"

The game is not challenging (unless you are a dumbass like me)

JackAstral responds:

lol I don't think it is either. Each level should only really take 2 minutes.

Thanks for playing!

The story is predictable and poorly written and conveyed. The platforming is extremely generic not offering much challenge. The Music is ok and the sounds are non existent. The "twist" at the end is a cherry on top. Its not really shocking nor does it make any sense.

The main character in this game has no identity, other than the fact that he has done something terrible. That is really all your given, dialogue is presented in a poorly aped version of Gyossait's approach, putting the text in the background to be read as you are playing so that the dialogue doesn't slow down the game experience. Here though, the back and forth between the unnamed protagonist and antagonist is poorly written and uninteresting to read. The game plays out like a story of redemption but there just isn't sufficient pathos to make you want to see this character succeed in his journey.

The actual game play is below average as well, and kind of annoying. The fading in and out seemed kind of clever at first but its really just a cheap trick to make the lack of challenge in the platforming a little less apparent. There isn't really much to say, its pretty bland.

Overall I give the game 1 out of 5. It's just not a good game.

JackAstral responds:

Thanks for trying it out anyway.

Way too floaty and not at all apparent what direction you are meant to go. And the moving platforms just plain suck. If you're going to make it so everything fades in and out, programme it so you travel with the moving platform. I died so many times misjudging those damn things I just gave up.

JackAstral responds:

lol I did that on purpose to make it a bit harder. It's actually pretty easy if you know what way the platform is going.

Thanks for trying it out anyway- sorry to hear you didn't enjoy it.

What a great message: Don’t fight to redeem yourself, just accept your sins and your punishment, because you can never atone for them no matter how hard you try.

Gameplay-wise, there's not a whole lot to say. My complaints are everyone else's complaints; the checkpoint system has bugs, the moving platforms don't work the way they should, and the fading to black every few seconds was a terrible idea.

JackAstral responds:

lol that's kinda true. I am working on a much improved sequel though- the idea, and message are all developed a lot further.

I actually coded the moving platforms like that on purpose to make it harder. People seemed to reallyyyyy hate the idea though :b

It's not exactly what cost one and half a star but I'm detecting a pattern on your games here, they are just stories with a few gameplay contents, exploiting that you could make any story be fully heard by people, grabbing their attention and maybe making it feel like they had part in it.
The real problem is mechanics.
Hitboxes should be tight and nice therefore the shapeshifting thing the player controls is not a suitable main unit, and also, the beam things should not have deadly bases when active, since you can pass through those when deactivated and it really tricks people(not in good way)
Jumping is bad, the player should always fall faster than rise (gravity 101) and momentum is meaningless here, but if you ever do a platformer where you aren't in a surreal, dark and flashing place and in more realistic situations instead, be sure to take that into account.
+add some way to keep the player over the platforms without having to walk, flashing is already enough trouble.
Thanks for the game.
