Reviews for "You Are Disabled"

This is absolutely the WORST GAME I HAVE EVER PLAYED. I just spent 15 minutes trying to pass 1 part and then it gets stuck on moving left, so badly that I died TWICE IN THE PREVIOUS ROOMS focing me back 2 rooms of hard difficult moving. This is literally impossible when the character spaz's out midway through a jump to pass the lava.

0/5 for serious annoyance

This game is dumb as fuck it is to hard you are fucking retarded make a better game you dumb ass, i bet you was dropped on your fucking head and the jump button wont fucking work for me and yes i pressed space fuckers

Broken game, fix spastic.

Kcori responds:

Sure, as soon as you fix disabilities in real life.

I know a lot of people said it was a good idea but terrible in execution, but I'm the inverse. If you make it to the end, It doesn't really do the message justice that life is unfair with people with disabilities or 'the horrible conditions plaguing' them from achieving their dreams, when most of the problems are from the attitudes from society and people around them that are more of a handicap.

I'd encourage you to edit some of the dialogue options, or try and work in a way to drive that it's society's fault for adopting a shitty attitude towards people with conditions. Currently the game plays as if you just want to pull such people through a field of broken glass than actually raise awareness of their day-to-day difficulty. I understand you made it in three days, but it still needs a bit more work in it to make it not appear as offensive (or 'Ablest') as it is.

I'd suggest giving the character more agency to explore the map or make their own choices that others reject or steer them back, and you do this well at the end, but I think it's something could be implemented several times earlier. You could for instance get the character who can't use their legs to say 'No' and try to climb walls (Which is a Paralymic sport) you could probably give more clues to the illiterate character that don't rely on text (There's a reason traffic signs are icon graphics when cars are hurling 70 miles an hour down the road)

I'd really spend more time on thinking if this game appropriately sends out the message you want it to, as some other reviewers get that its in line with their ideas of Eugenics.

I would love to be able to play this game with some sense of ease, but. The programming in this is just so nauseatingly bad in parts that it is physically impossible to get past five screens.

The game is supposed to be about disability, making awareness towards disabilities, and making people aware of how difficult it is to have those difficulties, NOT making disabilities worse for everyone that has them. It comes off as highly insensitive and extremely ableist that someone would make a game like this commenting ON disability but exclude those with disabilities from being able to play it.

Problematic issues here:
-no setting for colourblind individuals
-""spastic"" setting includes far too much flashing for those with epilepsy to play, and there is no warning on the game of said feature
-""crippled"" and ""spastic"" are actually ableist slurs, which should most likely be replaced. ""spastic"" should most likely be rephrased to either "you have spasticity" or something similar.
-even if you believe in using these slurs to accurately portray the shittiness of these peoples' lives, you provide no warning that ableist slurs are going to be used or that the content might be upsetting to those that have these disorders.
-according to the comments, you include actual IMPLICATIONS OF FORCED SEX AND SEXUAL ASSAULT. And provide NO WARNING. That is inexcusable, and personally bars me from continuing the game (even though my dyslexia and ataxia prevent me from progressing past a certain part anyway).
-No pause button
-The screen freezes during ""spastic"" so that the fireballs are invisible for a good deal of time.
-The ""his/her"" in the description is cis sexist and rejects all individuals of nonbinary gender.

The whole game seems unoriginal and sad, what with all the Shy Guys, typical overdone levels made entirely of boxes, intense ableism and nigh-impossible shittiness on behalf of anyone with disabilities for the sake of pushing some sort of ""message"" to people who are, in most cases, far more understanding and respectful torwards people with disabilities than yourself. I am disappointed that in 2014 people still think this level of ableism and portrayal of abuse is entirely okay.

Change the rating to Adult since you insist on implying forced sex. This is NOT a game acceptable for Teen rating, and even a Mature rating would be pushing it without a warning in the beginning of the game.
