awesome game
except laggy as fuck

First of all: this fishy clone has got a lot of diversity in fish, I like it. I don't like how you cope with it.
Having different kinds of fish brings a problem into the game: which fish is bigger? me or him? It's a lot harder to see this way! Your solution to this problem (the "eat!" arrows) is bad because of at least four reasons:
1. Sometimes, when you can't eat a fish, it still gives an "eat" arrow.
2. Sometimes, when you can eat a fish, it doesn't give an "eat" arrow.
3. I think it's pretty obvious your game calculates the number of non-transparent pixels of a fish-sprite, or the surface of a fish, to determine the size, but there are multiple problems with this:
3.1 Your sprites are animated, this means the size continuously differs (this is most obvious with the mantra-fish). This is confusing and not really pleasing.
3.2 Your jellyfish have a head with a bit of transparency (those pixels don't count?) and very thin tendrils, and because of this you'll almost always be able to eat 'em (the anglerfish too, why? At first I thought it was a trap [given they are anglerfish =p])
3.3 A lot of times the majority of the fish body is out of screen, besides not being able to detect an "eat" arrow, you can't determine the length and thus the size.
4. It is perhaps the most interesting aspect of such "have lunch or be lunch" games to gamble if you're bigger or not. With the eat arrow aspect you almost totally destroy that aspect (luckily we have problems 1 & 2, eh?)
Besides the eat arrows, I noticed two bugs:
1. I evolved once while not picking up a block or pressing the "evolve" button in the menu, It still said I was rank 1 but could swim to the surface, and my first real evolve had no effect. (I believe this happened during a supersize effect?)
2. I had maxed all my skills but was forced to pick a skill, after clicking around for a while i was forced to restart the game. Shame!
Also, the game can lag pretty hard on the highest difficulty, is this because of calculating the size? If that's the case and i'm not making all kinds of wrong conclusions, isn't it easier to take a scalar and a constant for each fish?
I really liked the diversity of fish though, and +10 kudos for taking the original fishy-fish in the game! (the black ones were best, they were hard to see and I really liked that). Overall it really is pretty good, and I really enjoyed playing it, but the amount of problems with it is too much (also given this is a clone done 40 times or so already!). I just can't give this a positive rating, sorry. I go the feeling you overcomplicated your code a bit!

poxpower responds:

Well you can turn off the arrows in the pause menu : )
It used to be that there were no arrows but people complained.

I'll work on the other issues. Again this was the first thing I ever coded, it's pretty badly coded haha.

i would give this 5 stars but its so slow on my computer i cant play it

poxpower responds:

Are you using firefox?

well... not a good game, the start is a bit amusing but not really funny
