Reviews for "Grace"

Grand!

Yep, truly Mogwai and Sigur Ros stuff :), and a little Philip Glass even!

Arbiter is right about the clipping, it also seems like it loops a few ms before it should, but I consider that a minor inconvenience, it's really about the whole soundscape that it leads into.

It sounds refreshingly unpolished, lo-fi if you will, without leaving the impression that the quality of your equipment led to that!

It's wonderfully done man - I can predict it will not get the recognition it deserves, because it just washes over you. However, I know that it takes a lot of craft to maintain the consistency needed for that, so hats off to you man.

The only thing that didn't seem totally appropriate was the wide panning on the drums, mainly the cymbals seemed to come loose from the mix a bit. Perhaps lower the volume a bit on those hi-hats.

Otherwise, I loved it. Download, 5/5. Good luck on MAC6 August!

cheers wintang for the review. again as i mentioned to arbiter i havent got a clue why it's clipping, unless it's the midi to audio conversion. I dobn't know where this lo-fi quality has come from either, it could be becasue when i sequenced it in cubase i did it in midi sequencer rather than normal project and so it routed all the audio to a buss instaed of stereo out.

Im glad you enjoyed the track and i take your comments on board about the drums too.

cheers

Awesome.

Lovely track. That trippyness at 52 seconds is noice. Beautiful and original melody too. Very Boards of Canada, and that is a ginormous compliment. You could of done some filtering on the strings to make them sound more Radiohead like. If you lowered the pitch on your drum samples it would sound very KingBastard. Anyways, this song is beautiful. It touches me <-- ( I know how you'll reply to that. Lol )

5/5

pitbulljones responds:

cheers watercolour for your review. Everyone keeps commenting on this trippyness. i can't really see it myself lol. anyways thankl you for your compliments, means a lot. You have a couple of suggestions i could think about using too, i.e the strings and pitching the drums. haha my song touches you at night.

neat

You know this is very chemical brothers like. They have several sounds like this its very good. The only advice i would give u is watch some of the sharpers strings volume a bit. Very cool check out my latest if your in the neighbourhood.

pitbulljones responds:

how do, how do, i would never have thought about chemical brothers with this track, never occured to me and ive got all their albums, i'll have to listen through them and see whether you're right..

thanks for the review, i'll be sure to bob by your page and drop you a review.

Very chilled - a little sad...

a few minor click and pops here and there but nothing to worry about.

Some of the higher freqs are a little harsh which contrasts with the smoothness of the background pads.

Personally, for this one, I think you could have used a "softer" drum kit - I'm thinking more brushes perhaps - but still, damn nice job.

The ending could have been drawn out just a bit more - very very slowly decrease the volume while ever so slightly increasing some reverb to give it more of a "fading and falling away" feel

This is a really nice piece and evokes a good deal of emotion - I think that even though it could use a few minor changes it's still very much worthy of a 5 - which is why I got this message:

Thanks for your vote, LJCoffee! You voted 5 for Grace, keeping its score at 5.00.

pitbulljones responds:

thanks lj, a good solid review there. i don't know why i've got these pops and click in the track, they simply shouldn't be there. with reference to the high frequenceis i'm assuming you mean the guitar. i get what you're sayng, but i like that harshness around the mellowness.

i might take you up on the brushbeat idea, tis a good idea that. With regards to the end, i did actually want to have a really slow fadeout on this, but i thought it was getting on the long side as it was, surprisingly enough, there isn't a single piece of reverb on this track, that ive placed in anyway. but i get hat you mean about getting that 'washy' feeling over. again good idea.

thanks for the review, i'll bob by soon and review you bk. oh and the 5 too.

Gentle, but not:)

Really like the chords, and the lo-fi sounds. The intro is good being drawn out as it is, but perhaps it goes on a bit too long. Again, this trk seems really loud to me, and not because i just listen to ambient music eihter:) It's quite trebley which could be the main problem, those high frquencies really cut through and are a little peaky for my tastes, the whole thing could do with a more ambient gentle mix, perhaps some reverb on the master and bringing down the hi-end would help. It's a nice gentle tune, but I can't really relax to it as it's also quite harsh production wise, perhaps because you've had to submit it at a lower bitrate.
I have heard of parargraphs btw, lol, it's just that i write my reviews as i lisetn through the song, so I tend not to worry about things like that:)
I like it man. Just wish it was all a bit smoother.

pitbulljones responds:

alright KB. cheers for bobbing by and reviewing the track. I tend to make really drawn out songs, just due to file limit i usually never post em here. the volume factor, it is loud, i agree, and i know why. I was mixing this at low volume as me flatmate was in bed, no headphoines, so ive been compensating levels and pushing higher than they should be, also ive got this cool mastering limiter called elephant and you can really push your tracks up in level, i think i added 6db to this via that. but i agree with you.

The bitrate is a problem on this track, at 192kbps it sounds a lot clearer i promise, but 4mb limit is a bastard. im not the greatest masterin technician yet, but i'll work on the things you've said. thanks fr the review again mate.
