What Makes This Work?
I asked myself this question as I noticed I had just spent over 30 minutes playing 'Looming' and still had much to uncover in the game. After collecting more artifacts and following the intricate story that seemed so natural to the concept, I found that the main element that kept me going was intrigue. The level of intrigue you instilled in me created an addiction and a lust to know more! And this is exactly what works for 'Looming'. The gameplay isn't original in itself, but it's used as a tool more than a core mechanic to help the player explore and discover the extremely compelling and surprisingly gratifying story that you managed to create through the two cultures you imagined and brought to life via wonderfully written excerpts and 1-bit style graphics.
I can see that you were going for more of an artistic, moving experience than a heavy-hitting, streamline action game and it's due to that realization that I was provoked to finish this masterpiece 100%. Though it isn't for everybody, it's the ones that have a keen curiosity that will enjoy it most.
Excellent work Mr. Weir!
