Just a Quick Suggestion Regarding Obstacles

I really enjoyed this; great art and sound design, especially.

My one suggestion in the future would be to make the obstacles more clearly distinct from the background. I often found that I would be knocked over by a tree branch or log because I didn't realize they were in the foreground. Some way of making these items jump into forward (maybe by using more contrast or more clearly defined features). As I'm sure you're aware, warm colors tend to come into the foreground, while cooler colors drift into the background. The other option would be to add a more definitive outline to foreground objects, but this would ruin your aesthetic. This problem might be the reason some people think the game is too difficult.

I will say I love the way sound is used to clue the player in on an upcoming enemy. It creates a good feeling of anticipation. Also the Prince of Persia-style narration was perfect.

Evil-Dog responds:

thanks for the review, we're taking all the inputs, level selection, more distinct obstacles, armors that are not only visual, etc and we're gonna put all that in the next game :)

Very well made.

Can't wait until you guys make another like this.

Simple concept, great execution

The concept of this game is simple enough. The obstacles are well-made, the graphics look neat and the pacing is great.

I have, however, two issues with some obstacles in the game. First, arrows. When I speed up (to outrun a horserider) there were several occasions where a branch would appear in a distance where it's impossible to block the arrow and duck in time, because the "backswing" of the shield animation is still in progress. The second one would be the voices of the guys standing in my way (farmers, hoplites and duelists). Their voices are (at least to me) too similar. Again, when I'm speeding up I don't have the time to process the semantic content of their phrases, I just recognize their voices (and act accordingly because they will be on the screen almost instantly). Now since their voices are so similar it has happened to me on more than one occasion where I was certain that it was a hoplit who just shouted at me and would jump as soon as I see movement on the right side of the screen - only to be impaled by a duelist. Sucks, and it's been killing me more than anything else.

Maybe I'm just bad, who knows, but it would be cool if you decide to make a sequel, youcould use voices that are more distinctive than the ones you're using at the moment. Regardless, this game is good fun :)

Evil-Dog responds:

yeah we learn as we make games, more permissive controls, obstacles standing out more, more distinct voices, it's all stuff we'll correct in Hippolyta 2 :)

Iwin

Not to hard not too soft. Just right. Story had amazing feel to it.
