Waited to write a review until I finished everything this game had to offer.
First to alot of the people having trouble with this game, there is a strategy guide. If you're stuck on one of the game's gimmick fights, read it and you'll know why the fight seems insanely hard. Nothing in this game is hard once you figure out the basics, not even Tale.
Now on to the actual game. It's probably one of the best on this site, sadly it will remain a sleeper. Is the dialogue amazing? It has its moments which is more than you can say about alot of games. Is the plot unique? It's an RPG. Every RPG follows the same plot, just names get changed. The art is top notch for a flash. The music is pretty damn good as well. However that isn't the main thing getting it a good score.
What's getting it a good score is combat system and in turn the Perk system. While the combat system favors strategy over everything else, the combat system would be bland without the Perk system. The Perk system adds a nice flavor to the game you don't expect to see in a flash game. Has there been other games to do something similar? Yes. Is it often that you see something like this and actually done well? Not really. Often a system like this has a "god mode" route and a "you're doing it wrong" route.
No matter which way you set up your stat points and perks, you could beat the game with similar difficulty to another path you could take. The gameplay would be different, you would need different tactics, but it was still beatable. Granted part of what made that work was the lack of options when picking your Perks and levels being a set in stone thing, rather than something to endlessly grind to make things easier... However that actually made for a better game (so far).
If this project continues and more chapters are released, I hope that there are more options to use within the Perk system, yet not at the cost of falling into the same old mistakes many games make with systems like this.
So what's keeping me from giving this a 10? Lovers to start with. What's the deal with that tarot? The strategy guide lists it as a special reward for people who helped support this game being made? Yet apparently the ownership of Lovers factors into % complete and actually quite a bit of the strats listed in that guide. I understand you wanted to give something special to people who donated. That's cool, but the rest of us are getting dicked because of it. Sisily is an incomplete character without it and we all get to use her. I would suggest you add in Lovers and figure out a new toy for those who donate that doesn't have such a detrimental effect on gameplay.
And the other things? Well I said I don't expect amazing dialogue or plot, but I expect basic spell checking and grammatical correctness. Then there are the minor bugs to major bugs (killing Rectiful).
