Definitelty better than Garafalo's armpit hair
If you haven't seen the commericals with Jeanne Garafalo or Alanis Morrisette (who are way too liberal to encourage conservative environmentalists) you should see them.
But this is WAY BETTER than the commercials with them in it, considering I support the environment, but I'm not going to go to Whole Foods to buy a $5 gallon of "organic" milk (which is really another word for "2%" if you think about it) when I could get it at Schnucks for $2.39.
Killing the lights for an hour is a great way to support the environment, especially since no one should really be up all hours watching TV or leaving the lights on unless you work the graveyard shift or are a security guard.
Of course, a garden couldn't hurt, especially if you're reading this in a "tent city", which hopefully you are not.
Don't limit yourself to just killing the lights. Kill the TV, Cellphone, Computer, and iPod for an hour. Instead of the hum of the electricity, listen to the quiet of the house, the ambience of the wind. You know. All that tree huggin' hippy stuff.
Perhaps you will hear the drip of the faucet that needs fixing. Later, you could fix it and save some money and some water. Hear the sound of owls and bats in your neighborhood. Maybe even a coyote.
I know an event like this seems silly. But I've lived three days in my house during the summer after a major storm without power. It is when you don't have the things you want that you can appreciate what you have.
