Reviews for "Dodgeman 2!"

NICE.

Throwman should try out for the MLB, he's wasting his talent!

Pros:
- Despite looking like it was made on MS Paint, the visuals are actually pretty cool and quite detailed.

- Awesome feeling of motion in moving levels.

- Impressively nuanced with a bunch of clever little things snuck in, like moonwalking on the moon.

- GREAT switch-ups in gameplay, kept it from feeling old or boring. Level 4 felt awesome, drew the similarity to Sonic 2 , and then Level 5 made me wish that Sonic 2 had a similar segment when Sonic jumps onto that rocket. VERY cool idea. Those moments were a nice.. homage, for want of a better word.

- Voice was worth a snicker or two, particularly the way he says 'PAUSE'.

- Enjoyed how the requirements and falling things evolved as the stages did, getting a spacesuit as the rocket visibly got faster and closer to the atmosphere was thoughtful and cool, as was getting a jetpack after you get as high as you can go with a ladder.

- Brilliant feeling of progression due to the connectivity between levels and the detail of their design.

Cons:
- I liked the stormy sound effects on Level 3, but it felt kind of like the game lost tempo for a moment without the music. Minor minor nitpick.

- Sometimes it looks like you're clear of an enemy but some invisible pixels will still hit you. Rare issue, but that could use some refining. Happens the most after something disappears offscreen and you move to where it just fell past, then suddenly bam! It's a bit frustrating when that happens at the wrong time.

- The difficulty balance was fantastic, even perfect, UNTIL the final level. It was a bit ridiculous that you could keep continuing if you died up until that point, and then suddenly at the hardest part of the game, when you need to the most, you can't continue anymore. I got there with one hit left unfortunately, and didn't feel very encouraged to play through the whole game all over again after such an ending. Siiigh. Anyway!

All that said, my conclusion is: 5/5, and 9/10. The good far outweighs the bad, and I hope this helps you or encourages you when making future projects. ^_^

Holmfry responds:

Wow! I'm really impressed with the feedback I'm getting! Thanks for this thoughtful and complete review, well done! :) :)

I've gotten the comment about adding music into level 3 from a few others as well so I might consider putting in some in the future, I just really liked how the thunder storm effects kind of increased the feeling of being in a storm for that level, changed it up a bit. But yah, still might go back and change that I suppose.

As for the ending level, that was more intended to be kind of a sudden death bonus level (even if you get there with 9 lives you'll still only get one shot at it), and just pretty much decides if you're going to end up getting the good ending or the bad ending, so I didn't want to allow continues. .but getting the good ending gives you bonus points so you could try again for a high score :)

Again, thanks so much for the feedback, both pros and cons - both are appreciated and useful for this and future projects :)

Holmfry

its okay

but i think there should be little powerups or somthing...

Holmfry responds:

Funny you should mention that.. there actually were powerups at one point, different hats Dodgeman could wear that gave him different abilities. But I felt that it kind of added too much to the game and took away from the pure "Dodge-ness" of it. Maybe for Dodgeman 3...? ;)

Thanks for the great review!

Great game!

Believe it or not, I thought the storyline was actually kinda humorous and simple yet complete. I didn't play Dodgeman 1 (I'm assuming there is one on this site) but I must say I'll be staying tuned for the next installment. Gameplay was addicting and original - I usually HATE dodge 'em games but there was actually a point to this one, and I wanted to do well so I could get to the next level to see what creative level setting I would be in next! Overall, great game with GREAT music soundtrack which kept me playing. (Kudos to the artists who created the songs for this.) I wish I could give you an 11.

Holmfry responds:

Thanks for the awesome review! :) I'll give you a little hint.. if you crave a little more, poke around on the main menu for a bit.. there might be some Christmas magic in the air!

Dodgeman 1 isn't on newgrounds, but you can find it at my own website, http://www.holmadegames.com. Although, you should be warned, I made it wayyyy back in 1999 and I was just a young lad at the time. It's pretty basic (Visual Basic to be specific).

I love the soundtrack myself, and have made sure to tell each artist how awesome they are. Newgrounds audio portal, you rule!

Still needs work

When you make a dodge game, you need to make precise collisions. Too many times, I lost a life even though the obstacle was far away from me.

Ohhh Yeahhh

So simple but so great. this is really a "gamers game" The classical early 90's style of game design is completely awesome, I love the gritty detail in all the cityscapes, and you chose a GREAT soundtrack for the game, excellent voicework too. All in all this is just a Kick-ass Flashgame.

Holmfry responds:

I'm so glad you enjoy the game!

Thanks so much for the fantastic review! :)
