Reviews for "NP - Piano Sonata No. 3"

Excellent

Certainly the best piano piece I have seen... I'm sick and tired of newage piano musings... it's good to see something of broader and more impressive tastes.

Great work... it almost sounds Russian-Late Romantic to me. The dynamics could have been better, and I think the pedal could have been utilized more. In addition, a more rubato approach could have been taken to certain passages, as often times late romantic piano music ventures into a realm where time signatures disappear (often times through the tricks of 7/8 or 5/4). The last note might sound better if sustained and perhaps even have a rubato arpeggio above it leading up through the minor triad up an octave or two and perhaps even ending on a 7th to give that incompleteness often favored.

You express a lot of themes in this piece, and I seriously feel it would be an absolutely incredible piece to orchestrate as a purely orchestral work beyond a concerto (I would volunteer to do this, but I don't know if I have the time and it sounds like it's a recording, which is hard to work with). There are elements of dozens of artistic styles throughout both the Romantic Era and even so far back as late Baroque... from a theory viewpoint, it's a magnificent culmination of dozens of traditions.

Your use of dynamics and spreading of chords is very impressive. Because it sounds recorded, I give you EXTRA props. The transitions are seamless, which is more than I can say on some of my own works. By far one of the greatest pieces in the Orchestral selection of Newgrounds.

Awesome work!

Bro,

You just won the NGADM! Congratulations! Let's dive in to this piece, shall we?

Oh man, it's all piano. You've got to be a good player AND composer to pull this off.
Good thing you totally are, hehe.

I just realized that I have no idea how to review this -- it's so unlike everything I listen to. I don't know how to fully appreciate all the dynamic contrast, tempo changes, and pure skill behind this awesome track.

The mood changes so many times; there's a great sense of emotional variety and expression all throughout the piece. The flow, energy, and power you put behind the notes really shows what a great pianist you are.

I thought that at times the low end was muddy, but then I switched to my good headphones, and it went away. I haven't been listening to a lot of stuff on NG for a while, so I guess I just need to warm up my ears again.

I suppose if I had to sum all this up in a word, I would say "feeling". It's everywhere in this song, and it separates this track from all the typical, boring, uninspiring stuff we find on this site (admittedly, lots of my songs fall in to this category).

I don't listen to classical music whatsoever, so I'd like to thank you for making it interesting for me, and hopefully others as well.

Sorry if I wasn't specific enough for you, but I don't know enough about this kind of music to be particularly helpful with my reviews.

Great job though; I honestly believe that the winner was correctly chosen.

Wonderful!

I believe this track is stunning, and I actually quite enjoy its lack of... conclusiveness, especially since I tend to loop whatever I listen to.

Transitions

The alteration of different feelings is well implemented. It gives the impression of a rotating jewel. My complaint though is that none of the pieces seem to conclude, as if the jewel was meant to rotate infinitely, so that the ending feels abrupt and confusing.

ProudAardvark responds:

Cheers, so, I see what you're saying about the transition issues. I think one of the main causes is my performance; I had to record the sections with a bunch of separate takes because I ran out of time to learn how to play it. Also, I think the piece suffered a little in reducing it from orchestra & piano to just piano. Many of the phrases and textures would repeat with color changes and dialog between piano and orchestra, with the whole thing being a few minutes longer. Trying to decide now if it needs that extra length to make the phrases breathe more. Ty for the review!

Real nice

Nice to hear something actualy good on here for a change :) x
